Sneaky Darrell Taylor signing to practice squad

For those not familiar with Darrell Taylor, he hasn't played since Nov 2 due to an ankle injury, and only played in four games this season (with three tackles). However, he was productive from 2020-2024. The columnist below speculates that Taylor could be a game day elevation.

Taylor, 28, is a veteran of five NFL seasons, most recently playing with the Texans. The veteran signed a 1-year, $4.75 million contract with Houston this season, but landed on the injured reserve on Nov. 5 due to an ankle injury. He was activated last week, but was released on Monday as the Texans needed to make roster space for safety Jaylen Reed.
A second-round pick in 2020, Taylor had immediate success in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks. In 2021, he finished with 6.5 sacks and 13 quarterback hits. The next season, Taylor made a career-high 9.5 sacks. In 2023, he finished with 5.5 sacks.

Meh.. Don't think it's going to make a difference. He was a bottom of the roster guy who saw minimal Defensive Snaps in 4 games. I don't think it's likely that he can provide insight that the Pats coaches couldn't get from watching the All-22.

was he a street free agent or was it a claim?

The very most to hope for this year would be occasional situational snaps, but he’s an interesting player to get a close look at for the future. By all accounts his best trait is explosiveness, which our edge corps could use.

Meh. Might have some insight into the scheme we can extract.

He wasn't playing ahead of Anderson, Hunter, and Barnett anyway.

More importantly, not sure if this means Chisson and Landry are really struggling physically

Is landry even present. He is a ghost now ...

Well he was out for a few games, right? He was back last week, though I don't remember how often he was on the field.

Landry played Sunday; he was just NOT very visible except for (? IIRC) 1 tackle on the Vidal fumble-scramble play.

So folks saying „meh“….. You want to tell me a „healthy“ (if true) former (3-yr ago) 9.5 sack guy couldn’t beat out Landry for 1 game day AGAINST his FORMER TEAM.
- hin & Diggs could have big day if you let them.

Just gives the Houston coaches something to think about. Certain calls could be decoded, but it makes Houston have to deal with the fact that if they leave calls as is, the Pats could know what's up. Another layer to coaching. Don't hate on it a little bit, even if the guy doesn't play a snap.

I don't have much concern about Chaisson but it seems clear Landry is out of juice to me. Jennings looks OK but as we know he is a little bit of a scheme mismatch. They definitely need more help there - it would be great to get Swinson going but it hasn't materialized.

I am not going to hold my breath that Taylor is just going to magically appear out of thin air and be the instant fix, but crazier things have happened I suppose. I believe his scheme intel on Houston's pass rush playcalls will be much more valuable to the Pats than anything he ends up doing on the field. The guy was literally in the building just last week so he has very up-to-date info.

My first thought reading this thread header: who is "Sneaky" Darrell Taylor?

Really?? I think most of us viewed K Chaisson as a Meh signing... how did he turn out??

Not sure about him now, but he used to be a very capable pass rusher and had the ability to drop into zones and actually do something rather than filling space.

I like this signing, if not for this week, going forward

They want to pick his brain for information.

This is an absolute win any way you slice it. You get a guy who may be able to help us get more pressure on the qb and rest Landry who has disappeared. A guy who knows exactly what the other team is doing and has a lot of experience with the guys he will be lining up against. A guy who wants to prove something. All the while making Houston uncomfortable with the fact that we picked him up.

What's not to like about this signing?

Hmm sub pass rusher?
Elijah ponder 22 snaps? Anfernee Jennngs 20 snaps? Or a guy with 24.5 career sacks, including 9.5 in one season?
Think we just got better .
