Skins/Eagles - MNF thoughts

I'm sure others have mentioned it on this thread but I only have one comment after watching those two teams play and that is:

I feel really lucky that we have TB as our QB. It was absolutely painful to watch both of them especially Campbell. When Brady has the ball I feel like we always have a chance to score. With those other two guys, not at all.

Mike Lombardi, with the best summary I've read about exactly WHAT Dan Snyder represents. Catch the ending part, especially:

Diner morning news: Lessons for Snyder | National Football Post

That article is terrible.

Has anyone ever stopped to think that for Snyder, the product on the field is probably secondary to the profits the franchise makes him? He brings in lots of FAs because they sell a ton of jerseys and tickets? His franchise makes more money than any other. He's clearly doing something right.

And, no, your example of the New England Patriots is waaayyyy off.

No, its not. I almost never agree with Dues, but hes right here.

The Patriots, going into this year, werepaying $15M to brady. $10M to Seymour. 9.5M to Moss, and 7M to Thomas.

Thats 35% of the cap on 4 guys.

Redskins merchandise sales are down nearly 30%. It's easy to get tickets for FedEx Field, 12,000 unsold seats for the KC game, and a huge contingent of Philly fans yesterday.

They were kicking people out of the game last night for chanting "We want Gruden" and confiscating negative signs that had no obscenities. Snyder is like a 5 foot 4 version of a third world dictator.

He's a great corporate gangster. He knows how to screw a loyal (and gullible) fanbase. John Dillinger made lots of money too.

Bravo. Great achievement.

Let's go celebrate at Six Flags.......ooops he drove that into bankruptcy also!

I only wish that Snyder were an AFC owner. Bummer.

It's a tribute to the NFL's popularity, inertia and the wealth base in the Washington area that owners like Snyder still have money making franchises. But not indefinitely. He IS destroying the local brand.

Their season was over the minute they signed Haynesworth.

Agree. He was this year's Deion, Bruce Smith, Jeff George, Jeremiah Trotter, Adam Archuleta...

The Skins are the anti-Patriots. They're all hype and nonsense.

The 'Skins are a complete disaster. For the sake of their fans, Snyder needs to spend a week in Foxboro and understand from Krafty how to run an NFL franchise properly...

Umm, thats kind of the point of running a business.

Snyder is an outstanding businessman. If consumers are stupid enough to pay for a crap-product like the 'Skins, that is their choice.

Snyder's problem is that he wants too much control over the football ops.

Pats have just 5 guys hitting the cap this year for more than 5 mil - Brady, Moss, Thomas, Light, Green - Skins have 10, and once again are among the league's leaders in dead money against the cap.

Problem is that parking revenue doesn't have to be shared with other teams and there's a lot of people not showing up now. So while you might think it's good business to charge $35 to park at the Skins stadium, which is in an area that makes Roxbury look quaint, the team not only loses that revenue when fans don't show up, it's forced to rely on other sources that have to be shared with the other 31 teams.

Keep in mind Snyder only had enough money to buy the team because he sold his company in 1999 at an inflated price. His business track record, including the 6 Flags bankruptcy, is not that impressive.

You may be nit-picking a little, Pats171. The guy starts a company, IPOs in the .COM era and makes a ton. Then raises capital, buys the 'Skins, and turns the team into one of the top 3 revenue-producing teams in the NFL. He has investments that have have diversitfied his holdings with varying levels of success. IMO he did the Six Flags deal to classify it as a loss so it brings his debt-to-equity down so his tax his less.

Bottom line is that the guy has a net-worth (not including the 'Skins) of $1.3b. That is impressive no matter how you slice it.

Skins were a top revenue producing team under Jack Kent Cooke. The team stores are empty now, as are more and more of the seats at FedEx Field.

Much of his net worth is tied up in his private equity fund, and the sports radio station he bought is now losing listeners because CBS converted its local station to sports, and has the Sports Junkies, which is extremely popular with 18-54 males and way oversells its ratings - their show is kind of like Dennis & Callahan meets Howard Stern. Moreover, most people don't want to get sports news from the owner of the team. So don't believe the 1.3b figure that gets tossed around. But even if it were accurate, Little Danny's net worth would be just 1/3rd that of Nats owner Ted Lerner, which would bother him to no end.

I agree that his PE portfolio is questionable at best. IMO, Snyder has taken many risks and like any good businessman, has experienced failures.

The origional arguement was, "Is Daniel Snyder a good businessman". We'll have to agree to disagree or derfer to time as the judge. He can sell the 'Skins tomorrow and walk away with $600m in cash - plus or minus $100m.

In one sentence you claim Dockery and Rahbach have been starters for years.

Then, in the very next sentence you say that two starters for years on the Pats were being called washed up.

Exactly the point, and I'm sorry you can't see it.

Guess what? The other two guys in the linebacker corps last year was a highly prized (for good reason) 1st rounder and a found gem UDFA who is developing into a solid player.

That "gem UDFA" wasn't so shiny last season, though, which is what I'm referring to. You do like to change the parameters.

The tomato cans surrounding the two "starters for years" (who, btw, people down here in DC are calling "washed up" - one of whom hiked the ball from the ground to his mid thigh on the penultimate 4th down and goal play tonite) aren't worth 2 cents.

How many pennies is Alexander worth at linebacker, or Redd, or Izzo? How much was Deltha O'Neal worth?

But, really Deus, please keep us all entertained in defending the team-building style of Snyder/Cerrato. This is great stuff, really.

This would be a valid retort if I were actually defending the team-building style of Snyder/Cerrato. Since I'm not, however, it's just another poor attempt at moving the goalposts.

And what makes $5M anything more than an arbitrary number?

The Patriots had 4 players above 7M (Moss, Brady, Thomas, and Seymour) while the skins have none.

Plus, your numbers are wrong. The redskins have 7 guys in excess of 5M. Haynseworth, Samuels, Moss, Portis, Landry, Hall, and Thomas. In total, they add up to 42M. The patriots top 7, add up to... 47M.

EDIT: NEXT YEAR, the Skins will have 10 guys in excess of 5M, and the Pats will only have 5 (if they don't resign Wilfork, or Mankins), but seeing as how theres no cap next year, thats irrelevant.

Redskins followup, as Daniel Snyder further alienates his fans....

The Washington Redskins haven't just stripped head coach Jim Zorn of the ability to call the plays. They've also stripped their fans of the ability to bring signs to FedEx Field.

Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post reports that the Redskins have issued a blanket policy that no fans are permitted to enter the stadium with signs of any kind. This is a new policy -- a few weeks ago the team banned only inappropriate and offensive signs -- but a Redskins spokesman told the Post he wasn't sure when or why the policy changed.
