There is a run stuffer we might have overlooked. He had a down season with the Browns but his past work indicates he is decent at his craft. Ahtyba Rubin is only 28. He should be relatively cheap to sign.

Lombardi knows him and I am sure they can see how he was as a Team mate from Sheard.

He is 6'2" 325 and he was know as a premier run stuffer but he has some sacks so it appears he can also put some pressure on the QB. Hopefully a bad Browns Team made 2014 an apparition for Rubin.

On what is left out there:
Starks is fine but he is older and trouble against the run (we don't need that!).

Raji once played at a high level until a bad year in 2013 and injury in 2014 so it is not known if his "desire" is top shelf anymore.

Red Bryant appears to be not just getting older, but eating himself out of the league and has spurned BB twice

VW , although we all love him is not a full time guy anymore.

Can confirm that #Patriots are interested in DT Ahtyba Rubin

#Patriots reportedly interested in #Browns DE/OLB Jabaal Sheard, and I'd expect them to look into DT Ahtyba Rubin, as well

"Ahtyba Rubin is another ex-Brown the Patriots reportedly are interested in, and he makes a lot of sense if Vince Wilfork doesn’t come back on a reduced contract. The 325-pound nose tackle is a stout run stuffer and has eight years of experience despite not turning 29 until July. He could form a massive duo with Sealver Siliga and come off the field on passing downs."

Rubin might be a steal!

I am all for resigning Branch. He played well down the stretch. Siliga, Branch and Rubin would be a pretty good rotation against the run.

Mike Lombardi will certainly be in both BB's and the players ear if its a fit, we know that at least.

According to some Lombardi has his handprints on a lot of things regarding personnel right now.

He's a very good player, was one of the guys along with Sheard I wanted the Patriots to sign.

I think I could live with a Siliga and Rubin rotation.
Then Easley, Jones and a rook at the other spot.

- "DT Ahtyba Rubin, unrestricted FA update, has played for five head coaches since being drafted in the sixth round in 2008. He is versatile enough to play in a 3-4 or a 4-3, which is why he has lasted so long, and he is one the most popular players in the locker room. Injuries and a different system last year, however, caused his tackle production to dip from 80 in 2013 to just 28 last season. If the Browns do not re-sign him he could quickly end up in Houston with defensive Romeo Crennel, his first head coach with the Browns in 2008, or Denver where former Browns general manager Tom Heckert is the director of pro personnel."-Sport Exchange

He is also a little taller (closer to 6'3" ) and faster than I thought. But he is still young and a proven starter.

Its a fact. Tyms, Sheard are his guys. I'm sure that there are more...

Its only been a week in FA but I think the Pats strategy is to grab a young, talented DT and CB and augment those positions with a veteran presence.

Those are both positions that they need athleticism at.

It is important to recognize that this is just speculation.
I despise how fans tend to assign responsibilities to people in the front office, as if BB will now defer his opinion to a hack like Lombardi.

I don't think Lombardi runs anything but he's definitely influenced SOME signings.

But you're right, BB has been doing things his way for a long time, Lombardi is just another set of eyes (with deeper specifics on the Browns roster), but BB seems to trust that set of eyes or else he'd have no use on the staff.

I wouldn't mind seeing Rubin signed and also Alan Branch. Have to figure one of Siliga, Rubin or Branch won't work out. Would have two left plus Easley and Chris Jones.

Cousin, this one is intriguing: don't go cadillac. Get a guy who can do one job, and pay him to do one job (run stuff). That is much of what you're replacing at this point (in V.W.) Question is, of course, whether that's the plan in the mind of Rubin and/or his agent.

Regarding Lombardi, he should just be happy they're still naming the trophy that, and to be working in the same building as the future namesake of that piece of hardware

Why would they all not work out? The fatties did last year. Of the 5, Easley is the most fragile.

Not sold on how effective Branch was?
