Sign the Beast XII -- Report: Pats in the mix for DE/OLB Jabaal Sheard

Sign the beast!

obviously have to get him first but if we do what might it mean for Ayers or possibly Mayo?

Sheard would be an interesting alternative to Ayers, though I think he would be pricier. He can play RDE, LDE and 3-4 OLB. He would make a very good rotation with Jones and Ninkovich, would be a possible Nink successor, and would provide insurance in case the Pats have to choose between 2 out of Jones, Hightower and Collins. If the price range is reasonable, I'd be all for it.

How much would it take to sign him?

At the LB position they NEED to have enough money to lock up Hightower & Collins within the next couple of years.

A guy I really wanted us to look at back in 2011.

He would be deemed an upgrade of Ayers when you take in to consideration his production pre-2014. He had a bit of a drop off last season.

He's reasonably athletic for his size too.

I wasn't a fan of drafting Sheard where he was drafted. He wasn't worth where he was drafted (early second round, ironically 1 pick before Ayers), but then again he would have been a better pick than Dowling.

That said, he would make an excellent rotational guy in a three man rotation with Nink and Jones and filling in at LB too.

Mike Reiss was pushing the pats to draft this guy a few years ago

This would allow the Pats to concentrate on drafting DT, OL, ILB, since DE and OLB would be pretty set on the D side. Not a bad player either.

Hm interesting. Wonder if he can come fairly cheap. If it comes down to Seattle or New England hope he learns from Kevin Williams mistake.

Both Sheard & Rubin from Cleveland would both be nice signings.

Always worth keeping an eye on former Browns when Lombardi was there. At a lower level. Tyms and also Dion Lewis.

In the unfortunate circumstance, IF Revis leaves, Buster Skrine could possibly interest them, ironic that the Browns are always so bad but they have decent FA talent readying to leave this year.

Reiss was in love with Sheard at #33 in 2011. I never saw it, personally. I thought that Ayers, Sheard and Brooks Reed were all over-rated. Paradoxically, all are now FAs, and any of them would be good fits depending on the market price.

There's lots of talent on bad teams. Look at how the Pats have used TB as their farm system.

You never know though this could be one of those agent just trying to drive up the price by including the Pats scenarios.
