Anyone else noticed today he can't tackle?
He missed several tackles today.

He's been a big disappointment so far, can't cover, has a hard time finishing plays, really surprised that Mingo hasn't passed him on the depth chart yet. Can he be even worse?

He will be replaced permanently. BB can't possibly like what he sees on film from Shea

I saw Mingo whiff on Kapernick.. he just slid right off him. Other than that I didn't see much from Mingo.

Glad it wasn't just me, he tried to one arm tackle a running back and he got ran over like a piece of paper.

I hope to see more of Mingo going forward, he has more potential.

Obviously he can.
McC looked more useful to me today although only slightly.
Of course without High on the field he doesn't look promising.
I dont dare to think of something season ending happening to Hightower.
Its the only injury I somewhat fear at the moment.

There is now almost 5 years of tape of McClellin being terrible - at DE, OLB, ILB, LB, just football in general...he sucks. Not athletic enough to make up for football IQ deficiencies, not fundamentally sound enough to make up for lack of athleticism. Doesn't "get it" in the way a player of his lesser physical talent would need to. I semi-get why BB may have taken a chance on him, but he was wrong. He's a bum. They'd be better served playing 10 guys a few plays per game than putting this guy on field.

Belichick specifically mentioned McClellin in his press conference - noted it was the first time McClellin had played off-the-line here and that he gave them some useful snaps.

Note also that Belichick doesn't feel able to judge how a player did without first seeing the film. And he (unlike us) actually knows what the players were supposed to be doing.

Why are people still so gullible that they believe that? We know, for an absolute certainty, that it's not true. If it were true, we'd never see players getting benched during games.

Well obviously he has to make judgements during the game - can't wait for the film on those moves. And some stuff both he and we can tell - if a corner is overmatched on a receiver say, or someone isn't setting the edge. But LB play is often more complex and we are missing both the all-22 and the key to what the player was supposed to be doing.

When he tells you that he can't judge how a player did without seeing the film, he's usually lying. Call it stretching the truth, if you prefer. It's the same with injuries.

Or, to put it another way: he's able to talk about Mitchell's block on LGB's run, and what he did on every reception, so don't buy into the ludicrous notion that he couldn't talk about McClellin's whiff on a tackle (just for example) if he so chose.

Just for comparison sake, PFF has HT and had JC as 80 rated LBs. Top 10 players. Roberts as a 75 guy, but young and potential to improve. Sadly, Mcclellin (this year at least) is a JAG worthy PFF 50. So yes he stinks. At least compared to what we expect here in NE. So whatever role BB though he might excel in, if put in the position to succeed taking advantage of his (previous overlooked) strengths, was flat out wrong. So God help NE if we need to put him in there as a full time role. IMO he's overpaid for sure both by PFF ratings, AND by the eye test - I'm sad to report. Like many, I had higher hopes. Probably another reason for the recent LB acquisitions. But its water under the bridge now. Maybe we can dump him in the offseason, or maybe he's hurt. But in his current form he's not gonna help us, nor does he provide value at his level of play.

Do i recall hearing he was hurt in TC? That might explain some of the drop off. Lingering injury maybe?

when you combine Shea's inability to read and react quickly with his lack of technique and fundamentals, it makes you wonder how he still has a job on this team.

Bb, however, does know more than we ever will, so maybe we are missing something!

McClellin robbed Belichick blind with that contract.

Agreed. But I think BB must have thought he could be a valuable asset (worth the contact) if used effectively to his strengths, but just hadn't happened so far. I think this was a rare whiff by BB.

Does anyone recall what position/role he was initially tried out for early in TC? That might give an indication of where BB thought he could be a useful cog in the NE D machine. I'll do some Google hunting and see what I can find, and report back.

One of the big stories of training camp was that McClellin only played defensive end. There were daily updates about how he still hadn't played linebacker.

I think it's true that BB will not judge a player 100% until he sees the tape but he will see the highs and lows. I do believe he views things in a different way though and this has been shown with Collins and Sheard. He'd rather a player be in the right place and not make the play than a player freelance and make a play IMO.
