Shaq Mason top 10 guard in the NFL?

He has yet to give up a hurry, QB Hit, or Sack through 2 games. He always had immense potential, this might be his breakout year. He is very athletic and extremely powerful . Rare combination for a guard to have both strength and athleticism. He was always a top run blocker, seems he has improved big time as a pass blocker. The right side of our line is lockdown right now. I'm still shocked we drafted him after Tre Jackson who had major red flags in college.

I've been a huge Mason fan since college and knew he was so close. Surprised it's not talked about more. Prob bc it's not a flashy position.

Mason is a destroyer out there and taking that aggressiveness to pass pro but controlling himself. Esp his hands.

Him and Thuney were directly responsible for that Gronk TD.

Hopefully 2 Elite G's by the end of this year.

Shaquille Olajuwon Mason was one of my all-time favorite collegiate o-lineman---watching him destroy Florida State's defense in a valiant ACC title game loss at Georgia Tech was a joy, and there was great celebration in these forums by yours truly after his drafting.

He seems a player that Dante would absolutely love coaching. A few seasons ago the offensive line was a rightful point of concern, but since then Thuney, Andrews, Mason and Cannon have all emerged as quality starters. Guard is about as low a concern as any position on the team save Quarterback.

Why ?

Mason had absolutely no experience whatsoever in pass protection being around that triple option offense for the majority of his college career. He was a total project with unknown floor and high ceiling.

Jackson was the complete opposite of that, being easy to project with only his injuries making him drop down that far.

Tre was pretty good technically at Florida State under Rick Trickett, but he didn't have any attributes that stuck out. You watched him play and thought "he's just not athletic enough to be a good NFL lineman". His power was also questionable. And of course, he was very injury prone with a bum knee. He had a good career at Florida State because he had good technique and his lack of athleticism didn't catch up to him because he didn't have to go against NFL level pass rushers.

When you watched Mason on film two things stuck out...power and athleticism...both areas he scores very well on. He has short arms but he knows how to use it to is advantage he gets low and under them with his hands, great leverage. Mason played in a basic scheme but physically the attributes were there


You watched tre Jackson in college and thought "meh"..not surprised he washed out

Doesnt change the fact that Mason was a project where nobody had any clue whatsoever how he would do in a pro scheme, whereas with Jackson you could at least project it. A projectable ceiling will get you drafted sooner than being a project with lots of potential.

Add in that Dante work out Tre personally and gave his stamp of approval and I dont see any issue with where anyone was drafted.

This shouldn't be surprising. Mason's poor Super Bowl distracted a lot of people from how impressive he was in all of the other games since about midseason last year.
