Shanahan's 2nd & 10 nightmare revealed

Joe Buck noted that there was a facemask on Ryan and Sanu when they showed the replay. But yes you are correct, it should have been off setting and the down replayed.

Or it should have been correctly ignored by the ref because it did not affect the nature of the play itself and there was no advantage. Unlike the hold on the play which gave Ryan time to throw. Also there was no general chippiness to the game, unlike the double face mask call in the Bengals game. This was not a missed call, instead it was superb officiating.

Re-watched some highlights last night and came across this bit from the week 3 game against the Texans.

Just before the 3-minute mark of the video, you hear BB specifically tell Josh, "We're probably only going to be in run-only mode now."

To me, that says that Josh should not worry about the flow of the game or alter his approach based on situation. His job is to score points until the HC tells him otherwise. And then the "probably" suggests BB will let him know if he wants a pass.

Too much of this has fallen on Shanahan and not enough on Quinn. The head coach was a spectator during this drive, I think he got caught up in the moment, and he should have been more involved.

Excellent find, perfectly captures your point. The whole video is the best Belichick mic'd up I've seen, thanks.

Rules are rules. It was a missed call. I don't understand why officials let the players play in the playoffs but in the regular season they don't? There's no consistency. That's the biggest problem. No consistency.

Agreed. Quinn kept saying "attack, attack, attack" throughout the game. If they had a 1 point lead with the ball at their own 3 yd line and 30 seconds left and the Pats had no timeouts, he would still have Ryan do a 7 step drop and go for a long td!
