No. He’s going to wash out of the league. Doesn’t watch film, put the necessary work in, and he’d rather be at strip clubs. He’s not a fit here.

I would take a chance on Lance. Nothing higher than a 5th round pick. He’s a bigger, more talented Malik Cunningham, with a cannon arm. Don’t know if the 49ers would take a 5th, I’m guessing a 4th. Maybe give them Cunningham and a 5th ?

Only way I’d want him is if he runs the 40 and turns in a decent time.

Bigger than Malik, sure, but more talented. no. He's not remotely the playmaker Malik is.

Physical gifts are great, but it's the head that can overcome that, and because of that, I'd prefer Zappe over Lance. Lance has been somewhat of a trainwreck since getting drafted, and his turnovers have been a killer. The kid has just been so up and down ... I thought he was better than Wilson but he still wasn't my top choice when he came out, and I still don't get why the 49ers were so enamored with him. Mac seemed like a better fit, but I guess, good for us that Shanahan passed on him.

I think it's hilarious Shanahan mishandled this situation that badly ... it's sort of crazy. He wasted three first-round picks, held Jimmy G hostage when Belichick clearly wanted him but tried to hold out to recoup a first-round pick, and stuck to that until Belichick walked away and Shanahan had to watch Mac (you know Belichick would have preferred not to draft a QB in round one and get a defensive guy instead) fall into our laps.

Even more funny was the fact he held out all the way until the end until he had no choice but to let Garoppolo walk away, and he got nothing to show for it. Had he not gone to a Super Bowl or had a deep playoff run last year, gambling away the club's future like that and mishandling the situation that badly would generally get most guys fired (I'm sure Belichick would be getting killed on here over this).

He's fortunate Purdy emerged, and he better hope the kid doesn't regress. Otherwise, it's probably going to get ugly out there. Their success is the only currency that's really helping him because I'd assume people would be all over him considering everything that's gone down.
This is why I voted yes. Would love to take San Frans new QB3-first-round-picks off their hands for what they pulled with the Pats. And I'll never forget only giving up a 2nd for Garoppolo when he had more trade value then than now.

Mr. Lance better have a (non Football) resume ready.

I always find this kind of discussion amusing. All over the rest of the board there's wailing and gnashing of teeth of how they can keep X, Y, or Z player, stretch the rules of the practice squad, take risk at this position, but not that one, etc yet here there's also talk about trying to find some way to get a SF bust to end all busts because he's a "modern" QB.

As a prime example, there would be a meltdown of epic proportions about how the Patriots suck if they traded for Lance, but then cut Boutte to fit him because they're supposed to cut "the other player", not the measurables one that the draft intelligencia salivated over.

Exactly, what have any of the 49ers QBs done? They couldn't even beat the Eagles in the playoffs.
Well he did kinda tear his elbow apart...during the game...

I understand your logic but Zappe really seems to have an unusually hard time with batted balls, which can lead to odd turnovers.

Can’t play QB in the NFL if you can’t get it past the LOS.
Agree. And I am 44 so for the dudes older than I that can give some context....and I understand the coverage/information available at the time was far different....was the knock on Flutie in 88 the batted balls or just simply the height without explanation?

I might. Give him a couple years learning on the bench behind BOB, see what happens. His mobility at least gives him another dimension that defenses have to deal with where they could play ball-control offense and squeak out some wins with their defense if Mac got hurt. He’s less nimble than Malik but much bigger. The mental side is obviously a concern but BOB had Watson playing like an MVP so I could see him coaching up Lance. The money isn’t awful if you can at least make him a decent backup, and maybe he becomes more.

I’d probably lean towards just sticking with Zappe and Cunningham but I can appreciate the opportunity. Plus it would be funny to have both Mac and Lance on the same roster while SF has neither and no first round picks either.

Not doubting this....but any reports to support your theory?

Well the other Bob can probably assure that he is in the proper mental state by opening an Asian masage Parlor called Bob's Handies.

Too soon?

If a team that just 3 years ago gave up 3 first round draft picks and picked him #3 in the draft is giving up on him. Then this kid is a bust

So NO THANKS if it involves draft capitol

Also imagine being a Niners fan. I would be wanting to string up somebody

Flutie was a victim of old school height/size discrimination. No matter how he showed up. It was what it was.

Same age and that’s what’s odd….

He didn’t really have that issue but he was tiny.

I recall him being good at moving around to find clear throwing lanes

Really ? Did you watch Lance play in college ? He’s got a better arm, is more accurate, and is just as good a runner. He ran for over 1100 yards during his only full season in college, and ran for 14 TDs. Also threw 28 TD passes with 1 INT. ONE INT.

Playing in AA against kids from Podunk State who have zero chance at playing at the next level.

1000% yes. Zappe sucks. Fall back plan if Mac gets
Zappe..low floor low ceiling. He is terrible.

Short...gets passes blocked at LOS frequently
slow and not mobile
very weak arm
indecisive and gets sacked a lot

I do not understand why anyone would want him as backup. He may be the worst backup qb in the league

Trey Lance has had a very rough start..I get it. But his ceiling is much higher. He has the tools. Tall, strong, cannon arm and mobile.
The team that can be patient with him will reap rewards. There is a reason he was picked #3 overall and Zappe at end of fourth round.
Lance has not has a fair shot in SF due to the injury and impatience. He needs a little time.

If you can get him for a 5th to 6th rounder ( I would gladly throw Zappe in as a "bonus")...you absolutely do that. His upside is so much more exciting than Zappe...who should not be in the league
