Many draftniks want to criticize Belichicks scouting ability. They question his ability to scout QBs. They question his ability to scout Safeties. It is because they are enamored with the purely athletic aspects, only.
There are certain positions on a Team where athletic talent does NOT dominate.
Those who worship the Peyton Manning arm, or the Colin Kapernick leg, don't understand why Bill Belichick has produced the most successful team of the 21st century with a relative athletic mediocrity at QB, in Tom Brady. He doesn't have a rocket. He can't run. All he does is think, play, lead, and win.
Nor do they understand why the Ravens did as well for so long with a too small, too slow, Safety named Ed Reed.
It is SIMPLE. These positions more than any others, require other additional qualities then what can be measured by a ruler or a stopwatch. Both positions QB & Safety need Brainpower, and Leadership traits, in addition to a bare but sufficient modicum of athletic ability.
Belichick tried to go with athletic ability when drafting Safeties, The fine athletic examples, Meriwether and Chung despite fine athleticism, praised by the scouts, FAILED, for lack of these other necessary attributes.
All the other Safeties on the Team may and do have lesser athletic ability, but they DO HAVE more ample amounts of both of these other cerebral qualities. Sanders, Gregory, T. Wilson, D Harmon, and (at this stage) A Wilson are still here competing for playing time. Only Devin McCourty has both, and he is one of the STARTERS and a budding Star, as a consequence.
If all it took was a rocket arm to be a QB, Ryan Leaf and Jamarcus Russell would still be in the league throwing passes. It takes more than that to play and win.
Marino had ample arm but his very marginal mental abilities never added up to a championshp. The only exception seems to be Terry Bradshaw. But he had both a rocket arm and some 'Good Ol' Boy' leadership ability too, as well as playing with a dominating Defense. Peyton and Colin have additional qualities too.
The Safety position needs BRAINPOWER, & LEADERSHIP TOO!
