Great report.

It's very valuable having your report and Grid's together. You see mainly the same thing, though you express it very differently, according to your respective styles and personalities. It jibes with what I've seen:

- Scherff is very physical, very tenacious, and potentially dominant as a run blocker
- Scherff has limited mobility ("is heavy footed") and struggles with speed rushers in pass protection

Another guy whose scouting reports I really like is Drew Boylhart, who writes for the HuddleReport, a pay per view site. He, like Grid, tends to be very frank in his assessments and is quite willing to go against the grain. It's a site worth subscribing to. He gives Scherff a 2nd round grade, and agrees that he's much better suited to guard, with some ability to potentially play RT.

Scherff's certainly not a LT, and certainly not a top 10 pick, as many project him to be. I've always assumed that Scherff's stock will drop in the pre-draft evaluation period when his tape gets picked apart and when his athleticism and arm length are found lacking. Grid goes further, and says that not only is best suited to guard, but best suited to RG. Spending a 1st round pick on a LG is one thing; spending it on a RG is another. That has me wanting to re-assess Scherff's tape. I've been happy to see if he drops to the late 1st round and consider him as a LG; but if he's too "heavy footed" to play that position well, it would certainly affect my draft grade.

I agree with this 100%. Overgraded as a LT currently (did you see his Maryland game? Horrible), but a potentially outstanding OG. I find it hard to separate them but he, Clemmings and La'el Collins are three of my top four potential Patriots currently. I probably have Clemmings a whisker ahead of Scherff and Scherff slightly ahead of Collins. Dante Fowler is level with Clemmings.

I've thought from early on that Scherff will slip from his current lofty status and still think that although it's starting to look a little less likely. I was about to say that the Senior Bowl would be huge for him but noticed he's not on the roster. Does anyone know if the rosters are complete? Or heard anything about why Scherff isn't there?

It might be to Scherff's benefit to not be at the Senior Bowl. I think his lack of lateral agility and foot speed would get exposed in 1 on 1's. I think he's a good prospect, but I don't think he's Zach Martin good.

1. I thought that about Scherff and the Senior Bowl but didn't want to say it as I didn't know whether the rosters were finished (aside from dropouts). You would think we'd have heard if he declined a Senior Bowl invite.

2. I really liked Zach Martin and agree that in terms of an overall grade, Martin probably grades higher. But if I want my RB to gain three yards on a third down, I'm running him behind Scherff rather than Martin. This team lacks a bit of drive blocking power on the OL. Scherff and Collins would both provide that which is why I'm so bullish on both.

3. The other thing to remember on Scherff is that he was carrying an injury earlier in the year. That might have affected ho he played this year.

I don't think he's a top 10 guy but if he drops into the twenties I'm tempted to snap him up and lock down the LG spot for a generation because we'll have one of the best in the game.

Why would a LG have a different skill set than rg?

I've heard collins could be a guard. And the pitt guy might not be good enough for lt.

Any other interesting huddle report snippets?

My understanding is that historically offenses put their strong side on the right hand side on the main and therefore tend to run to that side, it's why RTs are usually good run blockers. Therefore, you want the better run blocking guard at RG and your more mobile guard at LG because he tend to be the pulling guard. Also, because the LT tends to fully occupied with the opposing teams best pass rusher, the LG has more responsibility as a pass blocker which is again why you would want the better athlete on the left hand side. Personally I think those distinctions are a little redundant these days because neither offences or defences are that simple anymore.

Collins and Scherff would make great, potentially elite, guards but "the Pitt guy", TJ Clemmings, I think is better than both both as a tackle and as a guard. He is an awesome run blocker. However, he probably should get a shot at tackle before he's moved inside.

Wow, this report had me a little nervous to be honest. It was the first bigger name player that I didn't see what all the national draft pundits were talking about. Sounds like we are on the same page for the most part.
I had a chance to read Grids take and first off, wow! He is very detailed in his reports and I hadn't really considered the whole LG/RG dynamic. He seemed to move more last year and the minor surgery during the season could have affected his movement skills. Even when healthy he never showed Tackle qualities though.
Manx, if someone just watched the Maryland game, they would grade him out as a late round guy. It was brutal. I can't remember if that was the week after he had the surgery, but I think it might have been.

It was two or three weeks after I think. Look, he was up against one of the best pass rushers in CFB in Andre Monroe so it's not all bad. It's one of the reasons I'm such a fan of Monroe. If he can work Scherff over, why can't he do the same in the NFL?

Right at the start of the season, both Mayo and I questioned his high grade and we both felt he'd fall nearer to the bottom of the first, where I for one would be thrilled to get him. He might not be a LT but I still think he'll be a helluva guard.

It may seem silly but I would like to see him actually play some guard before drafting him as a guard. That is what happened with Cannon and we have yet to see him play guard consistently

Best LT I've ever scouted

I think Jeremiah Poutasi from Utah may end up being a better pulling guard and guard/tackle combo player as a pro. He has better feet than Scherff.

Scherff? Interesting. Did you watch his Maryland game?
Not whole game, saw clips, the way he's been destroying DE's for years and clearing wholes for his backs are insane to me, had a better '13 than '14 in my opinion

5'11" Andre Monroe absolutely killed Scherff in that game. He certainly did have a better '13 but I think he's still going to be an outstanding OG.

Maybe I'll change my mind but he's the best LT I've ever scouted right now
