Schefter: The Place For Mankins Is In New England
By: Ian Logue

ESPN's Adam Schefter told WEEI Sports Radio this morning that he believes the best place for Logan Mankins is New England....

I'm curious where the "You'd have to pay him left tackle money" comes from. I believe it, I just don't know the reasoning. I think that left Tackle is the highest paid line position, so that seems like you'd be overpaying for Mankins.

I would be ecstatic if the Pats got a 1st for him. Especially from, say, Carolina.

$8M+ is LT money. Maybe not highest paid, but more than the average starting LT in this league makes. Just because Hutchinson reset the bar a couple of years ago for guards in a transition tag fued doesn't mean they all should get $8M, let alone when there is draft compensation involved...

Schefter should be addressing his rational remarks to the player and his agent. The NEP have tried to get a deal done with the fool and the tool on multiple occasions to no avail. Last reports indicate he was offered more guaranteed money than Evans, just not the same AAV... He was offered more guaranteed money than our Pro Bowl NT, just not the same AAV. He was offered a deal absent funny money loopholes, unlike Revis and MacNeil. If he shows up in week 10 and plays under the reduced tag, or if he doesn't show and risks being a RFA again in 2011 as a result, he will have cost himself at least several million that he will never recoup no matter who signs him because at that point he ain't netting $7M more over the next several seasons because he won't have several seasons left to play and could likely find himself on the veteran scrap heap as a cap casualty after another 4-5 seasons. And that's before you even calculate what a lockout would do to his stock and remaining career earnings.

He could be playing here now with upwards of $30M guaranteed. That and not AAV is what security is all about. So obviously for Logan security isn't what it's about. It's about principle...aka EGO.

I would take a 2012 first round pick for him.

If the deferred year is what will get teams off the fence, then sure. 2011, we have 2 1sts, 2 2nds, 2 3rds - -so I'm perfectly OK with deferrring an additional 1st to 2012.

Perhaps from one of those "win now or else" pathetic teams, like, say, the Washington Redskins who are 3-2 and now (mistakenly) smell possible respectability?

You got it mo. Me thinks Logan will be in for a big surprise this spring. He may get as much money as the Pats offered. But, not more. When you factor in, how much he lost this year. He gets paid 6 games as a tender instead of 7m. Cost himself over 5m this year. If Pats offer was 35/5. He'd have to get 40/5. 8M per year don't see it. Of course, $$$$$ doesn't matter to Logan. Or so we're told.

What the hell makes Logan Mankins so great? I didn't exactly see him lighting the world on fire last year. And this year the offensive line seems fine without him so far. Is he really a game changer, worth game changer money?

I'd take a 2011 4th or 2012 3rd, assuming WE can't sign him which certainly seems to be the case

If we're talking Dan Syder here, we'll get the 2012 1st.

I'm kinda with you on this. Is there such a big drop of to option B that paying Mankins all the tea in china is on the docket?

Seems to me the Pats have it in their plan that "that position pays X". They've offered X, and Mankins simply doesnt want to be here anymore.

no adam it really isn't......

he turned down a top 5 offer..... I am done w/ him.

I wipe my hands of Logan Mankins...... For all you JC nuts.... how is that image for you?

What happens to your pro bowl guard when he cries at home in Fresno and no-one notices ? Screw you, Mankins, you put our team and our QB at risk because you were insulted by $3M for one year or a mega long term offer. The place for Mankins isn't New England, it's on the farm in Fresno with the other pigs.

I think you need to be more precise. :rocker:

The place for mankins is whoever wants to pay him. the patriots cant trade mankins because he isnt under contract and i think that mankins probably figures he might as well not sign his tender until after the trade deadline and week 10 so that he gets credit for this year and then gets to become a free agent after the year.

what i dont know and what will be interesting to see is whether the patriot can and will utilize their franchise tag on him so they can maintain a bit of control as well as get some kind of trade value. the franchise tag of course requires him to sign it as well, which is the current issue, but the average money of the top 5 guards in the league would be acceptable and actually would be less per year than the patriots offered him.

i have a feeling that this isnt over, when the patriots get him back, i have a hard time seeing him being anything but a benchwarmer unless there is some kind of injury.

i have no doubt in my mind that he would have been traded by now if he would cooperate, unfortunately i think things have deteriorated to the point where he wont do anything to benefit the patriots, even if it would be to his benefit financially for this year with a new contract from the team he was traded to.

Those who think Mankins would sign the tender and be traded away for anything more than a 3rd or 4th rounder is an idiot.

Mankins is a 3rd or 4th round trade value AT BEST

He is an OL who is definately above average but not exactly legendary

I think the reason he hasn't been traded is that there aren't any teams out there who believe that a good guard is the missing piece they need to make themselves a playoff or superbowl contender this year. That obviously includes the Patriots. Unfortunately for Mankins, he's learning that the grass isn't greener out there, and that the Patriots may have a higher value on him than any of the other 31 teams.

You could have said that about Branch back in 2006 also. It's not a matter of being "an idiot", it's just a matter of hoping to find the right match of a team with a need that's willing to pay. We found that in Seattle for Branch who was no more valuable to a team than Mankins. We either didn't have the match with Mankins or weren't as inclined to look this time.

No, Mankins is not a game changer. He's talented, but makes mistakes and gets beat like anyone else.

A player who commands top money for his position doesn't let himself get punked on the biggest stage, either. I've thought all along that Mankins may have an argument if he didn't get bent over and spanked by the Giants defensive line (including backups) in the super bowl. Evans showed up in the running game and pass protection all year, not just against weak opponents. Mankins is no Evans or hutchingson.

i would take a 3rd or 4th rounder for him right now. he isnt going to be playing for this team anytime soon barring injury, they would take the picks just to get rid of his ass at this point.

you cant tell me that the 'Superbowl in our own stadium or bust' cowboys or 'cant keep our QBs out of the MRI' eagles wouldn't love Mankins right now. hes a pro bowl guard and the patriots dont have to play them, if mankins would play ball, i bet they could get at least a 3rd out of those teams.

you seem to have a low opinion of him even though your team was reportedly willing to give him 6-7 million per year. hes a great player, and a great player you are willing to pay is better than any draft pick.

Currently we cannot run left side in standard formation. Its purly draw and trick pays. Dan is moving his man.
