Schefter: The Place For Mankins Is In New England

IF THE OLINE was young, I won't want Mankins back. We'll suffer if he goes IMO.

To you to whom "Screw you Mankins" sounds great, please don't complain about the patriots not getting much value for Mankins.

To me the potential $6-7 million per year cap savings over the next 5 years by not signing Mankins is terrific value. Throw in a 3rd rounder and I'm tickled pink.

Generally like Shefter........ Disagree with him here. Mankins already said he doesn't want to play another down for NE. Let him come in on W9, ride the pine the rest of the way this season....... only letting him play in the direst of circumstances.

Then let him walk off into oblivion next year. I don't give a crap if we get a bag of footballs or a sack of dirty laundry for that pig right now.

I restate my objection to keeping Mankins on this team at this point. The only way I'd want him back is with a long term deal intact. Short of that I'd trade him for whatever. I'd be happy with another 3rd next draft or a 2nd in 2012. NO ONE is going to give us a first and THEN have to overpay an OG, even one of the best.

Here's my reasons for NOT wanting him back in that lockerroom

1. He might be one of the top 3 OGs in the league, but that is after he goes through a full off season workout program, minicamps, training camp, pre season games, and several regular season games. The Mankins that will show up in mid November WILL NOT be ready to play at an NFL level, let alone an elite level.

You don't just walk off the street and play NFL football. Just look at Farve and Revis, and multiply it by almost 3 more months of inactivity. MAYBE and I repeat MAYBE, after 4 weeks of intensive work he can get back to an all pro level and help us for the playoffs.

2. But then you have to ask the question, WHAT is his incentive to bust his hump and risk his health for 4 hard weeks to help the Pats. It certainly won't be the few dollars the Pats will owe him for the last 6 weeks of the season. Why should he put out just to help the organization that he views just screwed him?

He will get the same amount of money AND his freedom, just by skating by and being a back up. Put in his 6 weeks and move on. Worse he could come up with a "hammy" in the first week and spend his 6 weeks rehabing.

3. The team moved on after he didn't report. The OL hasn't looked bad. You'd have to ask the question, just how much better would the Pats OL be if Mankins DID come back. What happens to Dan Connolly. How would his demotion play in the lockerroom, for a guy who is a 6 week rental.

No folks, I'd welcome him back with open arms IF he comes back with a LT contract in hand. If not, then I don't want any part of him. I just don't see the upside.

Ken - the upside to Logan on the team is injury insurance. Neal.

I wouldn't want to see mankins sitting or standing on the side lines. If its possible i'd rather see him de-activated and in street clothes for every game.

Point well taken and one I can't and won't argue with. This year I view him simply as insurance (something you plug your nose and pay, but absolutely NEVER want to use).

Oddly enough, I'm okay with him just walking at the end of the year. I'd prefer compensation, but I'd take nothing. It's one thing to deal with primadonna wide receivers, it's totally another to deal with primadonna ****ing Guards .

He can be in the street clothes, but I don't want to see him.

I thought of that, PWP, Neal is already battling some dings. However, again, what kind of physical shape will he be in when he reports? How long will it be before he'd be a decent back up? Finally, and even more damning is what kind of MENTAL shape will he be in? I can't see him being thrilled to be back, and what's the upside for him to put in the intense work necessary to get back to being an elite OG. 2 or 3 sub par games, given this situation, isn't going to impact value to other teams who have his 5 years of film on him,

Nope, its just a bad situation, made tragic by the stupidity of Mankins' position. The team lost a good player, but Mankins has lost even more.
