I restate my objection to keeping Mankins on this team at this point. The only way I'd want him back is with a long term deal intact. Short of that I'd trade him for whatever. I'd be happy with another 3rd next draft or a 2nd in 2012. NO ONE is going to give us a first and THEN have to overpay an OG, even one of the best.
Here's my reasons for NOT wanting him back in that lockerroom
1. He might be one of the top 3 OGs in the league, but that is after he goes through a full off season workout program, minicamps, training camp, pre season games, and several regular season games. The Mankins that will show up in mid November WILL NOT be ready to play at an NFL level, let alone an elite level.
You don't just walk off the street and play NFL football. Just look at Farve and Revis, and multiply it by almost 3 more months of inactivity. MAYBE and I repeat MAYBE, after 4 weeks of intensive work he can get back to an all pro level and help us for the playoffs.
2. But then you have to ask the question, WHAT is his incentive to bust his hump and risk his health for 4 hard weeks to help the Pats. It certainly won't be the few dollars the Pats will owe him for the last 6 weeks of the season. Why should he put out just to help the organization that he views just screwed him?
He will get the same amount of money AND his freedom, just by skating by and being a back up. Put in his 6 weeks and move on. Worse he could come up with a "hammy" in the first week and spend his 6 weeks rehabing.
3. The team moved on after he didn't report. The OL hasn't looked bad. You'd have to ask the question, just how much better would the Pats OL be if Mankins DID come back. What happens to Dan Connolly. How would his demotion play in the lockerroom, for a guy who is a 6 week rental.
No folks, I'd welcome him back with open arms IF he comes back with a LT contract in hand. If not, then I don't want any part of him. I just don't see the upside.
