Schefter: Source close to Patriots says he'd be "stunned" if New England traded Garoppolo

Unless the source's first name is "Bill" and the second name is "Belichick," I'd give this source about as much credence as whoever said the Pats would never release Lawyer Milloy. In fact, getting this out would be exactly what I'd do to drive up the price.

The real problem here is that we are in unknown territory without a map or GPS (or even a compass) when it comes to Brady's longevity.

The guy seems like a freak of nature and nutrition and conditioning.

But, is there a point at which his skills just fall off a cliff or do they decline slowly or do they "decline slowly and then all at once." Anyone who claims to know the answer to that question is bullshitting you.

The only QB in the SB era who continued to play at an elite level at the age of 40 is Brett Favre. Here are the retirement ages of the HOF QB's who played all or part of their careers in the SB era:
34: Aikman, Namath
35: Bradshaw, Bob Griese
36: Fouts, Kelly
37: Starr, Staubach
38: Elway, Marino, Montana, Tarkenton
40: Dawson, Jurgenson, Unitas
41: Favre
44: Moon
Average: 37.5

Sounds like leverage to me. The Patriots don't get to decide if it will be a smooth transition. If Garoppolo wants to play hardball, then it won't be smooth.

It's a QB league. I wouldn't trade a good one unless Ditka is on the other side of the table.

Help me understand how the Patriots do not have the necessary leverage to decide Jimmy's Gs fate.

Useless report from Schefter.

Lombardi would count as a "close source to Patriots", yet he thinks the opposite will happen.

You are 100% correct.

I don't think there is enough evidence to say Jimmy G is worth a 1st rd pick.

However because teams have not been trying to trade for him we don't know what his worth is on the market because there isn't one-yet.

The market on QBs is always ridiculously demand limited which is why the "better" prospects go at the top of the first round in a draft even though they are often far from the best available players.

Now, JG has actual NFL level gametape and looks pretty good in it. Also his contract for next year makes it easy to press the eject button if he unexpectedly melts down. Given how bad the upcoming QB draft class supposedly is I think that JG will be easily worth a first and more.

Lets hope for 2-3 teams pushing the price up even further..

This isn't really a surprise. They franchised Cassel then traded him and Vrabel for the 34th pick in the 2008 draft. If I were Belichick I do the same thing again unless somebody blew me away with a ridiculous offer.

You kinda argued against yourself.

Favre and Moon had ProBowl years past the age of 40 so there is a known territory.

Sure. I think if they put the for sale sign out they will get a 1st but until you get an offer, you don't know.

None of those guys are Tom Brady.

None of those guys had the intense health/fitness/training regimen Brady has.

None of those guys played in the "protect the QB at all costs" era of the league.

Schefter's as legit as they come so this is interesting but it really all depends on who the source is and whether or not this is all just an attempt to drive up the asking price.

Given Brady's play this year it's really hard to imagine a scenario where he declines next year and Jimmy opts to RE-SIGN with us.

Bill took less than a 1, so he could reward a solid veteran inVrabel, who was clearly over the Hill, but had a big contract. He got the parting gift to the LB and future Coach, and didn't lose much draft position when trading Cassell. Recall Josh said he was surprised it happened so quick, as he was going to offer a First for Cassell.

The real statement here is that Shefter's source would be stunned if the Patriots get enough value in return to make it worth trading Garoppolo.

Brady will decline sometime soon and there's no guarantee that a replacement drafted in the future will thrive in this system. Garoppolo has knowledge of, and success in, the system, plus another year at rookie wage and franchise tag options beyond 2017. His value to the Patriots has to be in top 5 pick range.

I don't believe Josh was offering a 1st for Cassel. If he was BB would have shipped him there.

People keep posting like it's a given that Jimmy will want to wait until Brady's ready to retire - I just don't see it. Brady looks as good now as ever, even if he declines suddenly in the middle of the next season the team will probably still give him at least another year after that if he wants it.

If I'm Jimmy I want my chance to start as soon as possible and that likely means not signing here.

You don't? Garoppolo has 91 career passing attempts and plays in an offense that is unique and which facilitates success at the QB position. It's not like JG was a sure-fire star with rare athleticism coming out school, ala Aaron Rodgers. You think a team would part with a first and a second for a guy who looked good for six quarters before getting injured on a routine play?
Yes.

That was doing Vrabel a solid, but the reason he settled for #34 is that everyone and their dog knew that the Pats were in rough cap shape with Cassel's $14.6M tender. The Pats had to move him in order to make any significant moves of their own.
