Schefter: Ochocinco will stay with Patriots

I don't see the difference between Edelman and the next best punt returner as worthy of an extra spot on the roster. (The new punt returner in this case would make the team on other merits than just punt return)
I don't know how someone who never played FS is all of a sudden a FS, because he covered slot receivers on a handful of plays.
Slater is a special teams player, who doesn't need to play offense or defense to be valuable.
Edelman is a punt returner who can fill in at various roles, but isn't very capable at any of them. If we are relying on Edelman on offense or defense, we might as well rely on Slater, its a liability either way.

What it comes down to, for me, is that I'd rather have Edelman than Slater.
Edelman's a better receiver, a better defender & a better returner;
Slater's a better...tackler of people who've already returned a kick 25+ yds.

I'd like both, because the future need for WR is definitely an issue

Welker
Lloyd
Branch
Gonz/85/Stallworth
Rookie
Edelman

Hopefully the rookie can take over the job as kickoff returner.

Fixed it for ya.

Slater gets a $2 million signing bonus in his deal, with base salaries of $700,000 (2012), $1.2 million (2013) and $1.2 million (2014). Slater can earn workout bonuses of $100,000 each year of the deal.

In all, it's a three-year, $5.4 million pact.

Three-year pact for Slater - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

Barring something truly exceptional happening, Slater is a lock to make the team. The question now is whether the Patriots will carry 5 real WRs or 6. There's an extra TE in the mix, so that would indicate it will be 5, but Polite's probably gone, so there's probably only 4 total RBs on the list instead of 5, so 6 real WRs is still a possibility.

Arguing with you is about as productive as arguing with a wall.

Grossman had more INTs than TDs and a 72% QB rating.

If you want to blame the WRs be my guest.

Maroney WAS the #1 RB on this team.

On what planet?

A Smith started 36 regular season games out of 45 = 80% starter.Antowain Smith NFL Football Statistics - Pro-Football-Reference.com

C Dillon started 37 regular season games out of 43 = 86% starter.Corey Dillon NFL Football Statistics - Pro-Football-Reference.com

THEY were #1 RBs for the Pats.

L Maroney started 14 regular season games out of 45 = 31% starter.Laurence Maroney NFL Football Statistics - Pro-Football-Reference.com

Show me another #1 RB in the NFL that only starts less than 1/3 of his games? The whole Maroney # 1 RB myth has been repeated so many times it has a life of its own.

You are way overexaggerating the lining up thing, again though, you are biased.
Clearly he struggles to read the defense right.
The point of this post, was that comparing Stallworths 22 catches to 85s 15 is apples to oranges.

Give me Stallworth.

At least he comprehends the offense.

Kind of hard to put the blame on the guy who caught 1 pass a game all year.

Its not hard for those who dont make excuses. Nowhere does it say that Johnson could not redeem himself in the biggest game of his career.

2006:
Dillon - 199 carries
Maroney - 175 carries

2007:
Maroney - 185 carries
Morris - 85 carries

2008: Injured week 3

2009:
Maroney - 194 carries
Morris - 73 carries

So... he wasn't our #1 RB? The two players I listed for each season he was here are the #1 and #2 workload split. I'm pretty sure you could guess how 2008 would have looked were he healthy.

You should know that starting a game on this team doesn't exactly say a whole lot about your status. The starter is whoever fills the role needed for the first play of the game.

They must see something in him that we don't. They know a lot more about football and the situation with Chad than all of us combined so maybe there is more to it than we think.

I just saw it on rotoworld and I posted it on the forum. I guess they know what they are talking about...

We went to the super bowl with a slot receiver and one WR. Why not worry about having a second WR and one more, maybe a developmental one? With three actual wideouts, then you start talking about backups which should consist of players that can contribute in other ways, or are learning.

Having extra veteran receivers sticking around thinking they're better than the ones who are actually playing is silly.

If you remember correctly, Josh Mcdaniels utilized 3 WRs alot in 2007, you had Moss, Welker and someone else out there always, they weren't always utilized, but they got open often because of the double coverage that moss generated, the same philosophy holds true in his eyes this upcoming year as teams will begin to focus on stopping Gronkowski.

i think everyone expects that The Patriots to just run the same offense they did this last year since it worked so well, but why limit yourself? Josh will be able to expand the playbook from last year, he will implement his signature 3 WR sets into the offense, and i think with the 2 TEs, they will give alot of deceptive looks, and either Pass block or Run instead, Gronk may become the best Decoy in the league, teams have to respect his ability to make a play on every down, which potentially takes his man out of the play when he chooses to block instead.

awesome... we're basically paying him a million dollars to watch another super bowl in the best seats in the house.

I'm baffled by fans who "don't like signings". What's to lose? Who are we to judge if/how someone will rise to the challenge?

I agree when the signing is for little to no value. I think fans who "don't like signings" are more concerned about who they COULD HAVE spent the money on instead.

And of course, there are other factors that come into play as well. I know Tebow technically wasn't a "signing" since he was traded, but there are a lot of Jets fans who don't like that "signing". For good reason, the Jets have only added to their circus.

I would have been a huge fan if the Pats had resigned Moss, but I would fully understand why other Pats fans would not like that move (even if he did come cheap).

Done deal. he will be a patriot next season. History tells us belichick values players who restructure and can't think of a player that has ever been released that agreed to do so. Who knows? Maybe jm cooks some plays up for Johnson that make all the hatred stfu?

maybe McDaniels can be the Ocho whisperer?? much like the effect he had on Lloyd?

Ocho would be great on the Jets, he would fit in with the rest of the clowns.
