Schefter: Drake Maye to start vs Houston [Also reported by Rapoport, Reiss, Kyed and others]

Patriots have put themselves in a tough position.

Are they going to allow Maye to start each game this season. Even if, for example, he is throwing three picks per game? Barring injury, going back to Brissett would be disastrous for fans and the overall look of the organization.

What if he is getting sacked five times per game? They also can't just go back to Brissett can they?

If he gets injured, the organization is going to get blasted for putting him out behind that OL.

Long story short, is Maye the undisputed starter now and going forward sans injury?
I think he has to be the starter sans injury. No matter how bad he plays, the point is that he's the franchise. Although I remember Miami benching Tua after he was the starter and that mostly worked out ok (as I don't think it contributed to the concussions, which is his real problem).

Two teams average 3.7 YPA, 4 teams including the Jets are tied 4.2 YPA. Whether we do it my way or your way they are a top run defense.
They're 14th in yards. That's an above average run defense at best not what I'd call a "top" run defense.
The Pats had 78 yards rushing, 139 total yards, one turnover, 3 points, 7 sacks allowed… they got slaughtered.
Pats ran only 15 times for a 5 YPC clip. They could run the ball just fine they chose not to.
I can’t believe someone is here trying to polish this turd into a diamond… but then I remember it’s you and telling it like it isn’t is kind of your thing.

The Jets D is 4th in points and 2nd in yards on a per drive basis. This despite carrying the 23rd worst scoring offense in the NFL.
They don't get a lot of turnovers and near the bottom of the league in scoring drives allowed. They're above average. Great at a lot of things but not everything like I said.
We watched 3 years of Mac sucking, being inconsistent and turning the ball over at a league leading pace. He was okay for 13 weeks with a very good offense around him in 2021 then he fell off a cliff. After teams figured him out he sucked with optimal conditions around him. You’re delusional.
Optimal conditions are having a real offensive coordinator to develop him not two of Bill's buddies who didn't know a thing about offense.

Sounds like the conundrum for a new starter in any year on pretty much any team. Don't know how the Patriots are much different than the other 31 teams in this respect.

jesus man calm the **** down
They should just forfeit the season, no point in risking injuring players pointlessly. Just don't show up for the games and eat the fines. Let's wait a few years until we have built a team that everyone agrees should be a contender as strong as the one we had entering the 2001 season.

The OT's are awful, so we indeed have a terrible OL, one of the very worst in the NFL. And our QB has been one of the worst in the NFL.

It does not follow that we are the worst team ever or the worst Offense ever, and that all our players on Offense suck. It just doesn't follow.

To be blunt, if we had an average QB and three better than average NFL OT's (2 starters and a backup/jumbo OT), this OL would NOT be one of the worst, and our Offense would not be one of the worst.

TO BE CLEAR
We have one of the worst Offenses, and probably will still have one of the worst with Maye. Having ZERO NFL quality NFL starters at OT is just that serious. That being said, I do believe that these starters will compete to be on the team as backups next year to a top free agent and a top draftee.
We don't have NFL starter quality tackles right now.

My biggest worry is that Maye will get killed and develop bad habits behind this atrocious OL. Our failure to acquire a decent stopgap LT could ruin our shiny new franchise QB.

Don't know how else to put it, we look to be screwed due to the lack of talent accumulation on offense over the years. Losing Dante Scarnecchia and awful OL drafting by he who has been fired, have set us up for failure in current year.

Facing pressure is something Maye was familiar with in two seasons at North Carolina. UNC allowed 409 pressures total in 2022 and 2023, the most of any FBS school, according to ESPN Research.

From 2022 to 2023, he had 953 rushing yards on scrambles, which was the second most in the FBS, trailing only Daniels. Over that same span, he helped produce 23 touchdowns under pressure, second most in the FBS behind Williams (25).

I really don't get why some are acting like Maye has no idea how to be a QB with a **** OL.

College competition is way weaker than the NFL. Many of those DBs, linebackers, and defensive ends he faced in college will be flipping burgers after they finish school. The NFL is a whole new level, this is the cream of the crop, exceptional athletes everywhere. The OL might get Maye killed. And that's the fault of management not stocking up offensive talent properly.

Then why wasn't he starting week 1?

Patriots were expected to remain in last place going into 2001. No one expected them to contend and no one was fooled by Kraft making Drew the highest paid player in league history.

See this is your problem, when someone proves you unequivocally wrong you don’t accept it.

You arguing that a defense ranked top five in fewest points allowed isn’t very good is silly… but still you persist.

Weird…I don’t remember saying they “weren’t very good”. Probably because I didn’t.

Also points allowed is a product of schedule. Nothing more nothing less. That’s why it can’t be used by itself to evaluate a defense.

You’re tilting at windmills….

I dont want to see Maye get throttled behind this woeful line.
Its a desperation move. Media, fans everyone putting on the pressure because of the quality of the product on the field. I feel that frustration too, its one thing to accept that this year was going to be bad, quite another to watch it up close on Sundays. This team is not going anywhere this season with or without Maye. Maybe more bearable to watch with Maye, but at what cost if he gets hurt. Anyways here's hoping we see this rookie QB behind the worst o-line in the NFL zipping quick passes before the rush gets there etc, etc, instead of getting "killed" because of a whiff from his left tackle. Nice storyline hope it becomes real !!

Biggest liability on the Patriots by far is Van Pelt.

The Patriots are in a position where Maye & his teammates must overcome him to succeed.
We'll see how things go but getting Maye ready to play by week 6 far outweighs some poor play calling with a bad QB.

Going forward the most important thing is how Maye performs but it would be nice to see some more creativity from AVP too.

You’re tilting at windmills….
Patriots were the "#1" defense in 2019 before they played the Ravens, the first good offensive team they faced all year.

They sure showed the Ravens they were #1 didn't they. Lol

The 2019 defense didn’t change, the 2019 offense got worse and worse. The defense ended the season ranked #1 in points allowed, the offense ended the season ranked 17th in points scored.

It’s a team sport, learn the game. Implying the Jet’s D isn’t good was a sht take.

Again... I don't remember saying or implying they "weren't good" most likely because I didn't. Try again chief, your gaslighting ain't gonna work on me.

A defense worthy of its #1 ranking would be good enough to handle good teams. They didn't and weren't. Period. They benefited from their schedule and nothing more. Kinda like how the "#2 ranked" 2021 defense got slapped around by every single good offensive team they played and then smashed 47-17 in the playoffs. They and their "genius" HC sure looked like they were Number Two didn't they. Lol

Because Maye was clearly better. Yet, they started Brissett anyways. Now, they are going to Maye after the predictable struggles with Brissett.
