Some may call me crazy, stupid, etc. BB always has a surprise trade every off-season. I think his next surprise trade will be trading Gronk. Why?:
    - he is injured a lot and hasn't played a full season in a long time.

    - contemplating retirement, gronks heart just isn't there or maybe he is no longer having fun with the Patriots.

    - trading Gronk would clear 7 mil of cap space.

    - we could see a high draft pick or picks for him.

    I really hope not.
If he truly want a change of scenery and compromises can't be made it's possible.
I said it before predicting a trade to the West Coast if one does happen.
I have a feeling the Pat's make it work with the greatest Tight end of all time.
The bidding would have to start at 2 high picks.
For me that's not even enough.

With all of those reasons to trade Gronk, why would any team give up high picks for him? People are trying to have it both ways, and I don’t think that’s how it would work.

Send him to the LA Chargers who overpay for a big attraction to appease a dwindling fan base and Gronk can get a jump start on his acting career as he signs up for Baywatch 4.

Why limit yourself, OP? Let's trade Gronk and Hightower to Cleveland for 1, 4, and 33. Gotta do big trades right.

With the possibility that Gronk is only threatening retirement because he wants a change of scenery or pay.
In this hypothetical teams would get in a bidding war over him.
He builds excitement he fills seats and he's the best redzone receiver in the NFL.
    Teams would bid.

I'm not sure how much of a surprise a trade of Gronk would be to any of the regulars on this forum since it's been discussed, ad nauseum, in several threads here for about a month now.

The loss from trading Gronk is not as much the loss of his receiving, but the loss of his elite blocking in both the pass-game and the run-game.

He's dealt countless devastating "chip" blocks to unwary edge-rushers on his way to running a route, and his wham-blocks and edge-setting have been an integral part of why the Pats ground game has consistently worked well even without any particularly "elite" RB. Not to mention the fact that, being both an elite receiver and elite blocker, Gronk's presence helps play-action immeasurably.

Trading him saves only about $6.4M in 2018 cap space.

I think a trade involving Cooks would be more of a possibility for a "surprise" trade. From everything I can see it seems that WR is a weaker class for both the Draft and FA. This may be the best time to strike if they feel Cooks is not a long term answer at WR, especially considering his cap hit this year and cost to resign.

While Gronk's 2018 and 2019 cap hits are $11M and $12M, respectively, he only has $4M left in guaranteed money - the last two remaining payments on his most recent signing bonus.

The Pats could extend him thru 2021 (his age-32 season) while converting portions of his 2018/2019 salaries ($8M and $9M, respectively) to signing bonus (more guaranteed money) - which would also reduce his 2018 and 2019 cap hits - possibly by as much as $5M this season.

    Possible, but not necessarily wise.

Cooks, Mitchell and Dorsett are the only three WRs on the Pats roster with NFL experience who are under the age of 30.

I would rather see them work things out with Gronk, but I would trade him for a high first if that deal could be done. Belichick obviously has a good relationship with Lynch so I would offer them Gronk and the opportunity to extend him first for the #9 overall, and if he doesn’t rise any higher I would take Tremaine Edwards with that pick

The only thing that makes sense about a Gronk trade is that BB trades guys with about a season's worth of tread on the tires. If I am an opposing GM, no way I give up a high pick for a 28 year old guy with a mile long doctors chart who's talking about retirement.

I'd accept that trade but it would still suck to lose Gronk

However after stealing Jimmy G the Niners would try to low-ball like a third.
I forget or I would credit the poster who said if BB trades Gronk to the Niners his plan to make the Niners Dominant again is almost complete.

C’mon Reamer. You’re better than this. You know damn well that wouldn’t be the end of it. B.B. would trade down out of number 4 to some q.b. hungry team and somehow find a way to finish the day with 4 #1 picks, 4 #2 picks, 2 #3’s and and an extra 2019 #1 draft pick. So, don’t you go off and play the trade of a Gronk down like that.
