Roster Acquisitions - Next Step: Defense

Some defensive addition considerations:

NT- Danny Shelton
DE/LB- Trey Flowers
DT- Akiem Hicks
DE/DT- L.J. Collier
LB- Devin Bush
CB- Bradberry
CB- Kyle Fuller
DE- Montez Sweat
DT- Daron Payne
NT- Eddie Goldman
DT- Jerry Tillery
DE- Clelin Ferrell
Shelton is 29...still relatively young. I think they should bring him in for a look-see. I'd be ok with the 2019 version...

I'll wait to see how things play out over the next few months, but the current group of cbs doesn't inspire confidence.
Cousin, Thinking the same.
They did pick up an UDFA CB Devin Hafford Tarleton State in Texas. Won many accolades this year. Second Team All American Defensive palyer of the year in his conference. About 6' 200lbs 4.5 speed and an even 7 three cones but 25 reps and great jumps.Good tackler. Ball hawk.

Sorry for my Tuesday boring weekday breakfast but a decent sized cinnamon roll by "Davids". Nice and moist on the inside. Plenty of vanilla frosting. Heated it for 22 seconds in the nuker. Plus vanilla coffee and OJ. I am sure it does not help my girlish figure.

Three "ya-got-ta-do-this" moves to get done now. This crap about "we have time before OTA's" is called being lazy. Get these guys now. Bring them into the building. Then no excuses about they are digesting the play book.

Clelin Ferrell DE
LV. We did NOT address this in the Draft. I have broken my hand pounding on the table for the #4 pick in the Draft. The kid was Drafted as a pass rush specialist. What he really does is set the edge and stop the run.......and we need......someone to stop the run. Don't look down the nose at his pass rush. Part time in the last two years 35 pressure on the QB. What BB has said is these are just as valuable. He has been effective rushing form the middle as well.

Maybe Josh tales JoJuan Williams for him. Josh can use a CB. OR... I think Agholor loves to play with Carr. We need CAP space. Agholor's best season was in LV. We now have 6 boundry WR on the roster and "0" real slot guys. Meyers played there but should be outside. So see my next pick.

Andy Isabella WR AZ. We did not address the slot. This kid is pure speed, Hopkins is gone for a third of the season and the AZ WRs are pip squeaks. Hopkins was your bigger WR.

There has been chatter about Harry to AZ.......Pull the trigger for two kids that need new homes. Hate this phrase but "no brainer".

Andre Dillard LT Phil. High pick that did not work out. A LT only hurts his value. But his contract is cheap and ends this year...rental? Wynn is on his "bye-bye" year He'll get hurt anyway. It has been said Howie will move him. Did not pick up his option. I am sure we can deal a low 2023 pick.

Trading Wynn solves our CAP issues that another poster astutely suggested. Kudos. See if we can get this kid or Steuber to play decent at T.

You want to see more Myles Bryant? :notsaying: At least we have some hope, M Jones, J Jones, and S Wade, are new and we can hope two stick along with welcoming J Jones back.

All of these would be welcome additions in my book!!!! Specifically, Flowers, Hicks, Bradberry and Fuller. Wouldn't mind adding Goldman as well to beef up our interior run defense also.

Know it would not come cheap, but Linval Joseph would help ease my mind about the run defense.

I'm fine with M Jones as the backup to nickel J Jones. He is an upgrade from Bryant. In addition, he is fine punt and kick returner.

Mills has one of the outside positions.
==========================
WHO WILL BE THE OTHER OUSIDE CB, AND WHO WILL BE THE BACKUP OUTSIDE CB(s) (pick 2-3)
Butler
Jack Jones (every 3rd and 4th rounder has made the 53 or the IR under Belichick)
Wade
Mitchell
Williams
Bethel

Butler will play cb 1, j. Jones the rookie will go on ir and gain 20 lbs

Here is the problem with M Jones at nickle...Wade was also very good at nickle in college. I don't know who will be the other outside CB. That's asking a lot for Butler being that he is now 32 and was out last season.

1) Wade will have a tough time making the team as a nickel back, behind both J Jones and M Jones. a 3rd nickel back is an expensive use of a roster spot.

2) I agree that we don't understand the plans for the outside. There are 3 positions, with Mills having one of them. Competing for two spots are Butler, Jack Jones, Mitchell, and Williams. Jack Jones is a roster lock. If he only a developmental CB for, two of others will need to make the 53.

Another thread where people try to gaslight readers into getting excited about a LB group that might be worse than the 2020 COVID-ravaged linebacker group. You will never convince me, without the assistance of future NFL tape that doesn't exist yet, that we're all set at LB with:
  • Bentley (solid, but if he's your #1 ILB, you have work to do)
  • Wilson (only took Winovich to acquire and Browns fans celebrated his exit from their roster)
  • McMillan (missed all of last year and never played a real down for the Patriots)
  • McGrone (see McMillan, except he never played a real down in the NFL at all)
And I'll even say that I like all 4 of those guys. Just not as the top at their position on the roster. I don't think adding Hightower would move the needle too much either, but it would help.

The other names that get mentioned aren't even the same position as the guys I'm talking about. Uche, Jennings, Judon...these are edge rushers. They don't make the linebackers directly better or worse because they aren't linebackers in the same way. Then we lump in the box safeties who would only be part time linebackers like Phillips, Peppers, and Dugger.

I get that the league is evolving and hybrid safeties/LB are the future, but I really don't think the traditional ILB is going the way of the fullback anytime soon. We have lots of encouraging LB-adjacent players, but very little to get excited about in the way of actual LB.
While what you say has merit.
How would unproven rookies who have never taken a nfl snap make us feel any better?

Never apologize for your breakfast posts, even the pedestrian ones! They are the stick that stirs my Patsfans.com drink! :haha:

See I think Wade learning the system for a year has a leg up on M Jones. IMO it’s M Jones that is the 3rd. Some have said Jones can play outside. Strange as it sounds he may be 3rd at nickel but 1st or 2nd if he can play outside.

There is no need for a 3rd nickel.

Not so boring. You never need to apologize for a good-quality cinnamon roll.

Yes theres always hope. Have to see how the rookies develop. Mills is ok as #2 but
if hes our top cb,thats a problem. Same for Malcolm. We'll see how it plays out.
The offense will be better this year. The defense still needs roster work

Yes, I mostly agree. If you think there is always hope, you have not been a Pats fan very long. In 2020 we had a different QB and it was painful watching games because there was no hope.

The offense has a lot of reasons to be hopeful. A crowded TE, WR, and RB room with Mac in his 2nd year should go a long way. I keep hoping (there is that word again) that Herron, Cajuste, Desjardins, and another can step up for Oline depth.

The defense still needs roster help - agreed. I am thinking Flowers and Hicks, plus a fatty. Not sure that is reasonable. BB commonly goes forward with what he has and tries to work it out as he goes. We have 1st/2nd year CBs and LBs, so I think it is doubtful that 2022 is the year for the Pats D - too many new guys. New adds hope, but it keeps looking like the D rebuild will start producing results in 2023 and beyond.

There is an argument that it takes more time for the offense to gel, so the rebuild should finish with the offense first and then address the defense. It looks like that is what BB has done.

Is there a chance Butler doesn’t make the team with all the young rooks competing?
With similar size and skill set as Butler?
