Why is everyone whining about Kraft following the rules of the NFL?

What should he have done? The rules require the interview of minorities. It is really that simple.

As an aside, I like Hamilton as HC if Vrabel and Johnson refuse the job.

With regard to choosing Vrabel this "fast", I'm sure that the Kraft's have had lots and lots of contacts with Vrabel over the last year (and, why not?).

Rooney Rule is a joke. Get rid of it

If you know what major pieces you want for your staff, and you are hiring high level leadership with the right pieces to the puzzle, just go for them. Who cares about casting a "wide net." Obviously if you pick a bad leader, slowly or quickly, you crash and burn. But, you don't have to interview everyone if you know the guys you want to pursue, especially if they can do a good job. And there's nothing wrong with doing it quickly.

That works in theory. However they just had a debacle of a season where the predominate narrative was that "Robert Kraft after firing Bill Belichick was unwilling to get out of his comfort zone and immediately rushed to hire a former player turned coach who he felt comfortable with because he knew him well who maintains the Bill Belichick legacy and came up and was groomed through his program and assistants".

So rushing to do it again, even with a coach with more experience and a track record just comes off as tone deaf and being unwilling to even consider other possibilities. There's already the Patriots run a completely archaic and non modernized organization because Bill and Tom propped it up way past it's due date.

There's nothing wrong if it works out this time. But it costs them virtually nothing to actually look and IF it doesn't work out, the story is going to be that Kraft is an idiot who made the same mistake twice and is intent on just giving the HC spot to guys that he knows and doesn't have any clue how to move his team into the future.

The issue is that it's not true in all cases. Coaches have been hired and got their careers kickstarted as a result of it. It's an issue in the situations where a team is dead set on one candidate and everyone knows it. The Patriots are a particularly egregious case because

1. They just took a lot of heat for a coaching hire where they were dead set on one candidate and it ended in disaster. Therefore, a lot of people in the media and fandom thought they SHOULD have an open process this go around if for no other reason than to get different viewpoints.

2. The Patriots front office is optically brain dead and fumbles all over itself and had one of the more blatant instances of "we rushed two quick sham interviews through to get it over with". Which like yeah, a lot of teams do it when they have a guy they want, but it's not all that difficult to be a little discreet about it and when you make it look like an egregious skirting of it, it pisses off the league office.

So naturally they got a lot of heat for it.

This sort of reminds me of when Kraft was filming that stupid video series and had that dumb camera kid in the press box without the other team knowing about it. Like at the end of the day it's not a big deal, but optically you gotta kinda know the situation (especially with your team) and cover all your bases and don't needlessly open yourself up to very avoidable damage.

They won't do that the way you want. They aren't going to mess up playoff teams. What will happen is they will make a blanket rule saying no interviews until after the Super Bowl. Which will effectively put teams without a HC in a holding pattern of a month. The current system is the compromise.

If a team interviews someone, determines they are the right person, and then it doesn't work out, that's an organizational problem. Mayo was not a Rooney Rule hire. He was a "Kraft wanted him no matter what" hire. That was on the Patriots org.

Kraft isn't getting criticized for sham interviews, he's getting criticized for because he is optically ******ed and it rubs people the wrong way when it takes zero effort to not do so.

He was hired right away because Kraft made him the HC in waiting as part of his contract. That allowed Kraft to bypass all hiring rules for NFL HC's including the Rooney Rule. The irony is that if that was not the case, Kraft would have been FORCED to abide by the rule and interview another coach before hiring Mayo, which would have been one of the few safeguards the league could have provided from having the dumb rushed process he had.

This isn't up for debate. This is well established and what factually happened.

JFC, this was a Kraft SETUP, so he didn't have to deal with Rooney.

You posted a downside which I responded to with why that wasn't the case and you moved off of it. The reality is your downside isn't a downside. Organization make bad hires all the time. The Rooney rule does not force hires. Never has. It forces interviews.
