Re: RIGHT or WRONG? -Indy to have Pregame ceremony honoring opposing QB Peyton Mannin

I don't see what the big deal is. they do this in other sports all the time. if brady left and came back to fox I would hope they would go all out for him and honor him with some kind of ceremony.

In week 2 of the 1994 season which also was Joe Montana's final season and his first trip to SF since he went to KC - There was no ceremony of any kind held by the 49ers F.O...believe it or not.

Re: RIGHT or WRONG? -Indy to have Pregame ceremony honoring opposing QB Peyton Mannin

Agreed it will depend on what it is but with Irsay I can imagine it being over the top sappy and weird.

I can imagine Irsay coming out dressed in drag, then proceeding to blow a big line of coke at the podium, so nothing would shock me.

Word out is that on the big scoreboard they will be showing highlights of Manning's Colts career...probably SB against the Bears for sure.

They should show highlights of the '06 AFCCG instead, since that was actually the 'real' Super Bowl that year.

Aside from the 2 losses to the NYG, that's the game that continuously makes me sick every time I think about it.

Hopefully those highlights are followed by a lot of INT's and Manning faces...:rocker:

We've changed a bit as a society from 20 yrs ago. Aside from that, the Eagles decision to honor Andy Reid may have either put the idea in his head, or been the icing on the cake if Irsay were on the fence.

We may end up seeing this more now due to these 2 examples.

Re: RIGHT or WRONG? -Indy to have Pregame ceremony honoring opposing QB Peyton Mannin

Things like this don't matter to me. Whether they do it or not, I don't really care.

I'd actually tune in for that lmao...

That one is tied for third for me... It was an emotionally devastating yes, and we did collapse, but flashbacking to that 2010 divisional round game makes my skin crawl in a way that no other games save for the SB losses do.

For some reason that one doesn't bother as much as it probably should. LIke I said, I'd have the 2 SB losses and then the 06 AFCCG loss to IND as my top 3.

After those 3, I'd have to pick the BAL loss in last year's AFCCG as 4th...then the NYJ loss in the 2010 season would round out the top 5 for me.

The one out in DEN in 05 was tough too though, so that may actually rival the 5th place for me.

Re: RIGHT or WRONG? -Indy to have Pregame ceremony honoring opposing QB Peyton Mannin

Back to the topic at hand, think it is the right thing to do... Manning needs to be credited for all he did for his team and the city as well. There is a children's hospital named after him and he is responsible for helping to create the legacy in Indianapolis..

Re: RIGHT or WRONG? -Indy to have Pregame ceremony honoring opposing QB Peyton Mannin

Right thing to do. Manning a once in a lifetime type player. He left the Colts in good terms, after spending a decade and turning the Colts into a powerhouse. It was a mutual split and it worked out for both teams...Besides he might be a donkey now but Manning will always be a Colt.

Re: RIGHT or WRONG? -Indy to have Pregame ceremony honoring opposing QB Peyton Mannin

It's wrong, but they are weird in Indy. I have told the story here before that my husband and I went to the Indy/Pittsburgh playoff game in 2005 as we guessed wrong on where the Pats would be playing. We bought Steelers hats before the game because we were annoyed at a pathetic article in the newspaper urging people to wear all blue and white to the game and not to sell their tickets to Steeler fans. We were shocked that: A) they were selling their opponent's gear in their Pro Shop; and B) that the fans were smiling at us and talking nicely to us while we were in a long line with said hats. We figured it we were in Boston we would be lucky to get out of there alive, or at least without being called every name in the book. No one said a cross word to us...

Re: RIGHT or WRONG? -Indy to have Pregame ceremony honoring opposing QB Peyton Mannin

It's a ridiculous thing to do! Let the fans show their appreciation by themselves if they want (or not want). Even if they wish to give him a standing ovation before the game, that's fine. But for the organization to roll out the red carpet like that for an opponent during the middle of the season, regardless of who he is, is just bizarro. This is a post-retirement type of honor. If I were a current Colts player I'd be pissed.

Re: RIGHT or WRONG? -Indy to have Pregame ceremony honoring opposing QB Peyton Mannin

this didn't go so well when Tebows broncos played that team in florida and they threw a big ceremony for tebow.

Re: RIGHT or WRONG? -Indy to have Pregame ceremony honoring opposing QB Peyton Mannin

I don't have a problem with it but it is sort of weird to do it while he is playing against you. If it was me, I would have a nice video tribute during a time out and save the pre game ceremony for when he retires and they put him in whatever the hell the Colts have for a ring of honor/hall of fame. That said, not a big deal, he was obviously a hall of fame player for them.

Re: RIGHT or WRONG? -Indy to have Pregame ceremony honoring opposing QB Peyton Mannin

Not sure why it's controversial in the least. Manning was a huge part of Indy and the main cog to the successful machine.

I actually think it's appropriate for this specific player and situation.

This might be the last time peyton plays in indy, so why not?

Re: RIGHT or WRONG? -Indy to have Pregame ceremony honoring opposing QB Peyton Mannin

Save it for after Manning retires.

Kraft would insist on the same thing for Brady, if it were the same situation.

I say no way. We didn't honor Drew Bledsoe when he came here as a player for another team. We tried to crush him, every time. Only after he retired did Kraft (and the rest of the Pats organization) welcome him back.

You sound disappointed PatsDeb. Just admit it, you went looking for a fight didn't you

Re: RIGHT or WRONG? -Indy to have Pregame ceremony honoring opposing QB Peyton Mannin

Nothing emphasizes that football is a business more than the PM and Colts divorce.

Irsay is doing this for profit and customer satisfaction and that's okay as long as it is recognized as such.

It all came down to money, both in the present and the future: PM was greedy in his contract, Irsay was greedy for long term revenue and success. The "suck for Luck" year was only sweetened when the Colts were assured of the #1 pick and then some effort went into winning. They got the best franchise QB for the next dozen years in Luck, much like they got Manning in the nineties. All of these events were the result of shrewd (or callous) business thinking and execution.

I am sure Irsay will capitalize on the event to sell more Manning memorabilia and still have left overs for his retirement fest, the ring of honor ceremony, jersey retirement and induction into a future Colts Hall of Fame.

I cant gainsay it because the fans in Indy deserve a better separation than was afforded at the time of the split. He is a great quarterback and he did create a spirit of community and success in Indy for so many years. So a ceremony, no matter how exploitative it may be, is appropriate.

My only concern is that such an exhibition will be used to shine a poor light on the Patriots when Welker returns to Foxborough. I cant see the need to do something like that for him at this stage of his career, though I for one would be the first to give him a standing O when he trots onto the field.
