Report: Patriots looking for potential backup replacements in case of Jimmy trade.

If I recall correctly Bill Belichick pioneered the roster management philosophy of retaining two, rather than three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster.

Unique circumstances in 2016 caused a deviation from that thought process, with three quarterbacks.

If Garoppolo is traded I would expect the Patriots to return to a two QB setup. A third quarterback will definitely be signed for training camp (in part for injury insurance, and in part to limit the number of throws Brady has to make over the course of seven months).

A rookie might be drafted late or signed as a free agent, potentially landing on the practice squad. But a veteran like Hoyer would be nothing more than camp fodder and kept on the top of the shadow roster list.

I think that's completely dependent on how far along they feel Brissett is.

Brissett wasn't ready last year. Getting a backup, in case Brissett's still not ready this year, seems like the sort of prudent move BB would make.

My sources tell me that an alien space ship landed in Foxboro last night and asked that Rob Gronkowski be returned

btw. I consider my report to have the same Credibility as any of these myriad of Brady/Garapolo stories

At any rate, you need to limit Bradys throws in TC, so 4 arms are likely to be in first 90 at the end of July regardless of how many wind up on the final 53

So let me get this straight. There is absolutely no chance at all that the Pats will trade Garoppolo, but they are looking at back up QBs just in case they do?

Indeed. I'm of the opinion that this whole Jimmy G trade/no trade stuff is Bill's football version of the old "Who's On First?" routine and he's playing it on the media. Their problem (the media) is that they haven't caught on.

BTW, here's the original routine in case anyone here doesn't
know about it. One of the best sports comedy skits EVAH! Ayuh!
