All I can say is "Wow, this guy truly MAY be the Chosen One". BB must have really seen the need to get him in there and put great importance on grooming him quickly. Mid-October-Mid November was right around the time they understood that Armstead wasn't going to be ready and that Sopoaga really wasn't the answer. Looks like BB stepped outside his box a bit regarding Siliga:

Quick-hit thoughts around Pats & NFL - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

1. Second-year defensive tackle Sealver Siliga has become an important run-stuffing presence for the Patriots who should play extended snaps in today’s AFC Championship Game. One of the reasons he’s emerged from practice squad player to starter is one-on-one tutoring with head coach Bill Belichick. When Siliga was on the practice squad from mid-October to mid-November, there were a few times that he was invited to the team hotel the night before games by Belichick, who went over film with him for about an hour each time. Maybe it’s commonplace for head coaches to spend such one-on-one time with practice squad players, but that was the first I’ve heard of it.

The chosen one or just a desperate need?

Whichever, he's been a revelation in the last few games.

I think its both and more.

I do think that this kid has impressed the coaching staff with his ability to pick up the playbook, apply it to game situations and he has played pretty well. I think BB sees this kid as having some good upside and is spending a little more time with him and seeing how MUCH he really can absorb- find his ceiling so to speak.

I also wonder if BB is trying to learn a little more about him and when the time is right, be more informed to make a call on how much they would lose production-wise if Wilfork does not come back to the team. Clearly there is a huge gap but if BB thinks that if Siliga can give them 75 or 80% of VW at a fraction of the cost then that needs to be factored into how they look at the position short & long term.

As robertweathers wrote, both.

Obviously, from this, BB felt an urgency regarding that position and devoted unprecedented time to a Practice Squader on nights before games in which he was never goin to play.

The fact that someone like Reiss (who's been around the team since the beginning of BB's tenure here) sees that as unprecedented says volumes.

I think the chosen one is selling it a bit much. At what point was he chosen? Before he was signed by the Broncos? After the Broncos and before the Seahawks?

He's clearly someone they signed to the PS, who clearly practiced well and was an obvious choice when they realised they were in desperate need of a run stopper and they needed to get him ready ASAP. Credit to The Slugger, he was obviously up to the task.

OK, manx, not the best terminology.

I didn't mean to say this guy is the best thing since Wilfork or is even the future. But it certainly is evident that he was made a top priority with urgency in the middle of the season and was treated in an UNPRECEDENTED fashion by BB for a practice squad player.

They are going to need to replace Wilfork soon - - he has certainly grabbed the inside position at this point.

Re: Reiss: Siliga Had Hour Long Film Meetings Night Before Games While He Was on the

He's a big body who was willing to learn. Besides Belichick, Wilfork has been almost an undividual coach and Sopoaga too, reportedly.

If Vince can play, they will work out contract details. He's worth much more to us than to someone else at this stage of his career. Silinga isn't some big lumbering guy, he's fairly agile and could work in a rotation with Wilfork and Jones as it looks know.

I dont think we need to look at Wilfork and Siliga as one or the other. We could keep them both, possibly releasing Kelly.

I liked our defense better when we were 3-4 with the large body line and very athletic linebackers.

No, I agree with you on that completely. Not wanting to knock BB's eye for recognising what Siliga could do or Siliga's achievement either. And you were spot on to recognise this - I wasn't being funny.

I dont think you can compare Kelly to VW or Siliga as they are different players. Kelly was playing pretty well before he got hurt and if he can come back at 100% that would aid the pass rush from the line.

With that said, if they do cut him it would be a $1.7m savings. He could take a cut to stay. Who knows

Re: Reiss: Siliga Had Hour Long Film Meetings Night Before Games While He Was on the

I've got to admit that I don't get the whole "cut Kelly" notion. Assuming Silaga and Jones return, why would anyone not want to have both Wilfork and Kelly in the DT rotation? At worst, you've got Jones/Kelly as a passing down combo, with Wilfork/Silaga as the toilet clogger/run stuffer duo, and you can mix and match Wilfork/Kelly as needed.

Agreed. All of the "elite" defensive lines have a solid 4 man rotation at DT anyway.

I agree that the cut first mentality is dumb. Put the best group on the field, but make business decisions if they become necessary. For Pete's sake, some of these players cost more to cut than keep depending on contracts.

Yep. These things need to play out. We also have no idea what will come of Armond Armstead either. For all we know he could be the next Devin Wyman.

Siliga, VM, Kelly and Jones is a pretty solid interior line rotation. If Armstead turns out to be a player and Vellano gets a bit stronger and is better at the point of attack and VW and Kelly seem a bit too expensive then you make the decision when appropriate.

Re: Reiss: Siliga Had Hour Long Film Meetings Night Before Games While He Was on the

Great info. If BB was willing to give a PS DT one-on-one tutoring, he may be delegating more of the higher level stuff to the coaching/front office staff. I love BB's eclectic approach to everything about running a team. Hope he signs another extension.
