Yes, there are several players who will be UFA's in 2017 instead of being an RFA like Butler. It would seem that Belichick would focus on them now instead of on Butler. Folks may be disappointed. However, IMHO, for 2016 negotiations, there are many in line before Butler: Hightower, Collins, Sheard, Ryan, Harmon and Ninkovich for a start.

The Pats might consider Butler because they have him in a better spot. It's possible that they could tie him up for a few years at a decent price.

Of course, none of us know what the numbers are for those involved, but now is the time to lock the kid up. He's a keeper.
