Reiss: Growing pains for Pats' WR redo?

Weak article. Didn't make it past half way.
This was an article Reiss decided to write the day Welker left, and just waited to see Brady paired with reserves (which happens every season) to pen it.
Good to know that Peyton Manning with everyone healthy has more weapons than Brady with potentially 5 of his top 6 not out there with him.

The comparison to the 2006 receivers is a poor one, and that's unusual for Mike.

That 2006 set was beyond teh suck, save for Jabar Gaffney.

This is going to be one of the media's themes all summer. Quite frankly, I am already over it.

Of course there are going to be some growing pains this summer, but we saw in 2007 an entire receiver roster turnover and the Pats came out firing. Yes, the Pats don't have a Randy Moss and Amendola hasn't proven he is Wes Welker. But that season proved that a complete overhaul of a receiving corp doesn't mean it will mean much when it comes to the regular season especially with Hernandez back and hopefully Gronk.

Hernandez and Gronk make the 2006 comparisons useless. They are two proven receivers in this offense better than anything the Pats had in 2006. yes, there are concerns of Gronk's readiness for the season, but if he is a go he is better than the Pats' 2006 receiving corp combined.

Mike's not really writing anything new here. It's a lousy hand being dealt to Brady. The 2006 comparison is an apt one, although he should at least be better off at TE, so that should help.

With luck, it'll work out fine.

The receiving (tight ends and wide receivers) will probably be O.K. in
the long haul provided Amendola, Gronkowski, and Hernandez do not suffer season ending injuries.

Since I am basically not a nice person, I cannot wait to go to summer training camp and watch TFB melt down and unleash a barrage of F bombs at a couple hapless WR candidates. Trust me, it'll be epic!

although he should at least be better off at TE

This might be the understatement of the year. To say that the Pats TE's this year compared to 2006 "should be better" is like saying the Denver Broncos QB situation last year "should be better" with Peyton Manning instead of Tim Tebow.

Also, he's at least deeper at RB than he was in 2006. Dillon wasn't the same that year, and Maroney was... well, Maroney.

Gronk's already injured and Hernandez is an injury waiting to happen. Given that the Patriots TE situation was better in 2006 (Watson/Graham) than Ballard/OhOh/Fells, IMO, I felt my posting "should be better" was appropriate.

Preventive maintenance on gronks back, Hernandez had a scope and they are already done? What's next amendola broke his finger and he's done for 5 years. All these decisions were ones that will benefit the team and they will be good by the season. WOW deus.

I never claimed either was done, but I'm not sure what you're "wow" about. Gronk missed 5 regular season games last year, and Hernandez missed 6. Gronk has had multiple surgeries on the same arm and will be dealing with back surgery as well. Only a fool would claim that they can be positive he'll be on the field for the Patriots this year.

As for Hernandez, he's never played a full season for the Patriots.

I expect both to be ready, given the reports that are out there, but I'm not fool enough to claim certainty.

I believe this article was written too early in the off season. I think
he should have waited until at least 2nd week of TC.
However he is ESPN and his boss probably gave him marching orders.

One thing to remember from Past experiences with new WRs is
some get it and some don't. With so many new WR's I can
only hope two or three really get it.

But it is more than just smarts that is needed. They also need to be talented
enough to win their match ups week after week.

It's been specifically mentioned that Brady has not been his usual nasty self with WR ****ups, probably because he knows there's nobody else if he ignores them.

Gronk missing the entire year? I give maybe a 2-3% chance of that at most. Missing the first six games is a far greater possibility, but I wouldn't bet on that either at this point.

As for Hernandez, his injury last year was not one of the "injury prone" variety. There isn't a player who wouldn't have been significantly injured if they had a player land on his ankle the way Edelman landed on Hernandez's.

And the other two years, he missed two games each season. He seems to be really tough and a fast healer. So even if the odds are good that he will miss a game or two this season, it doesn't appear to be a high probability that he will miss significant time.

"should be better"..... this is all over "should be better"

"should be better"..... this is all over "should be better"

So instead of debating my retort to your ridiculous statement that we cannot be positive Gronk won't miss the entire 2013 season to support your argument that the 2013 TEs are currently should be better from the 2006 version TE, you post this. Ok.

I am fairly positive Gronk will be on the field this year. Only an idiot would think him missing the entire season is anything but a remote possibility. He may not be 100% Gronk at all this year, but it is highly unlikely he will miss the entire season. If it was anything but a remote possibility, the Pats would have delayed the surgery until February of next year. It looked to be a necessary surgery, but not a surgery that had to be done this offseason.

BTW, I wasn't responding to your post "should be better". I was countering your argument about the state of the current 2013 TE situation. Nowhere in my post did I mention your "should be better" comment or compare 2013 TEs with the 2006 TEs. I am just countering your take on Gronk's and Hernandez's health situations. I countered your reasoning, not the statement comparing the two TE classes.

The only way this is an issue is if Amendola misses a lot of time. Certainly a possibility but far from a certainty. If he stays healthy we'll be in fine shape - all we've really lost is Lloyd who impressed so much that he's still a FA who anyone, including the Patriots, could sign. If Amendola stays healthy all the naysayers will look stupid. Take him out for 12 games and we could have a problem. But sure, if you ignore Gronk, Hernandez and Amendola it looks like 2006.

This is now.
Just wait. TFB's patience will wear thin. Bet on it.

This year could be a down year for the O if gronk can't stay on the field and dobson doesn't work out. I have faith in the D this year. Our running game will still be very good this year. Just hopefully having #12 back there will elevate the WRs/TEs
