Of course, it's Twitter so this is more than likely nothing. Just something to keep an eye on, going forward. Naturally, should the mods feel that this doesn't deserve it's own thread, feel free to move it as I have a busy day in front of me and won't be on much today to delete it myself if it ends up being BS.

I read a tweet the other night that suggested that there is a deal being crafted, but I didn't post it because I had no idea who the person was, or if it was one of those stupid tweets that gets retweeted a billion times. But yeah, I have read something alluding to a deal as well.

Straight from the Twitter feed of Incarcerated Bob.

If the Pats are interested and Butler's agent ( with no major contract experience) is smart, he'll contact somebody with lots of experience negotiating contracts , either another agent or a former team GM who might now be unemployed to "hold his hand" and guide him through the process , while staying under the radar....
Who wouldn't want it if they get paid for their experience? Butler's team gets a steady hand and the Pats know it will be handled in a professional manner....

I doubt any deal gets done this year if at all. Butler will be 28 next season. He gets 1 shot at that big contract. He will have only saved 2-3 million going into it to this point if he has been extremely frugal. The Pats need to pony up the dough or Butler will rightfully wait 1 more year.

Let's put this in perspective.

Butler has his mom and 4 siblings. He has his future kids and grand kids and nephews and nieces. If I were him I would be thinking "this is my one and only shot to make sure they never have to worry about having a place to live or food on the table". 50 million (which is really 30 after taxes) does that. If I were him I would look to get the most I can this time around particularly cause his first big contract will be so late in his career he will have no shot for a 2nd one near as big.

If I were Butler, I'd tell Bill and the patsies to piss off. And then have an all-pro year and leave for free agency to the Browns and get paid 16 million a year. He'll be a 3 time Super Bowl Champion. It'll be all good.

Before he even sits down at a table with the Pats he should go out and get a reputable NFL agent, not a guy who someone knows..

He completely lost traction last summer, due to the shortcomings of his agent..

Maybe the agent is crawling and licking BBs boot

This is based from the tweets of @richierich. Question is how would a Rhode Island agent would know this since Butler's agent is based in the South.

Right now, he has no kids and obviously no grandchildren, so speculating that he needs a 50m dollar contract to help take care of his family is borderline insanity.

I get where you're coming from, but there are plenty of people who provide plenty for their families on 100k dollar salaries, and most often less. I realize that a football player will want more, but most people don't make 3-4m in their entire lifetime, let alone their late 20s.

Malcolm would be doing just fine on a 3 year/33m dollar deal with incentives, particularly if 15-18 of it were guaranteed. Actually, he'd be filthy rich.

I DON'T CARE!!!!!! In three weeks my long term Pats worries will narrow to 16 regular season games and the playoffs. To the best of my knowledge, Malcolm Bulter will be on that team, so what comes after the 2017 season will have little meaning to me until after the last game the Pats play.

He'll either sign a deal with the Pats or sign with another team. Those are the only two alternatives, and neither will affect what the Pats put on the field THIS year. The fact is that some guys are going to move on. ,and some are going to stay. It happens EVERY year. It's that simple and no amount of speculation and threads are going to change it.

Unless you are in total rebuild mode, a la the Jets, EVERY season is its own little entity, almost independent from every other year. The chemistry of the team will be different no matter how hard you try because usually about 30% of the roster will be different from year to year. Every year the good luck and bad luck ratio changes. The Pats had a league leading injury hit in 2015, and had one of the lowest, just a year later.

In 2015 the Pats lost their top 3 CB's and we had no idea that would work out. After this season, we will have at least 4 of the 5 under our control (Gilmore, SJones, JJones and Rowe - I'm not sure about Colman). So comparing the 2 seasons, in 2018, even if we lose Butler, the CB position will have a lot fewer quesition than we had in 2015

Frankly I'm too old to waste any more time on Butler's future until something happens. Which is kind of ironic, given the amount of time I just spent with this rant.

The primary issue for Butler is injury risk in the 2017 season. If he is willing to extend now, your numbers may make sense.

If the season is over, and he has had a reasonable year, which should be doable opposite Gilmore, Butler has a major opportunity. I suspect that he will get more than $18M guaranteed from some team that has a good organization and cap room. As Ken says, he'll either move on, or he won't. We've had much more serious issues in the past.

It is not even clear that the patriots would be in the running AFTER the season. They are likely to franchise JG, which will tie up the serious money for awhile.
