A 4th round pick that turned into Randy Moss. And then the 1st we got from SF turned into Jerod "Rookie of the Year" Mayo. Did BB know fur sure he was going to get Randy Moss for a 4th? Maybe not but I believe discussions must have been in place already and he had an inkling he could use the ammo from the trade of his extra 1st rounder to get a deal done. He turned a late 1st into a high 1st and Randy Moss. I can't believe anyone can criticize that trade now.

You can't criticize it now in hind sight. But at the time of the trade a lot of long time board members were that Sat evening. To name names i was new but i remember people like ray clay, pats one, box etc. all going WTF thats all we get when the trade was announced.
I agree that their must have been talks going on and that BB knew all he needed was a 4th. To make it clear at the MOMENT the trade was announced i thought we got screwed. Looking back after everything turned out the way it did it was a good trade,but what if SF who was in the playoffs that year continued to improve we would have never landed Mayo.

At the moment we traded the 28th overall pick to a team that was coming from a 7-9 season and picked 11th that year. SF's next year 1st pick was very likely to be higher than 28th.

Even if SF had an incredible progress the worst case escenario was to "drop" four spots from the original pick, which were compensated by the fourth rounder that Belichick surely was already planning to use on Moss.

It wasn't a bad trade at the moment, in the worst case escenario it was only even. It ended being really great.
