Redskins CB Bashaud Breeland Offseason FA Target?

Picking this guy out of the crowd seems rather random. Are you related to his agent, by chance?

He's the 'Skins #2 corner behind Josh Norman.

In four seasons: 266 total tackles .. 56 PD .. 8 INT .. 7 FF.

IDK. Seems like he might be a little cheaper than Butler, but if the Pats are willing to pay two high salaries to CBs (and I'm skeptical), they might as well stick with Butler.

It seems to me that where the Pats are thinnest on defense, personnel-wise, is with inside LB and in-the-box safety - roles that overlap to a large extent. It may come down to best-player-available at one positon or the other when the Pats pick.
Agreed. Unless some great prospect (not following College ball by the way, so no idea at all) at DE falls to the Pats I don't see a big need to draft a DE early. Right now the DEs under contract for next year are Trey Flowers (4th year by then), Deatrich Wise (2nd year), Derek Rivers (2nd year). That's plenty young. Good would be signing a veteran who still has got a few years left in the tank and isn't too expensive (Ziggy Ansah? Demarcus Lawrence is perhaps the top FA DE out there, but he is going to fetch a nice contract).

I imagine they'll franchise him but who knows. Itll be a very different team. That team is another that will be cutting to create $.

I suspect they won't want to commit big $ at first and will want to see him have another good year.

IDK. Fuller had two very good seasons, then was on IR all last season after knee surgery. Obviously, the Bears declined to pick up his 5th-year option this past spring, but he's bounced back with perhaps his best season so far.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that the Bear should have at least $47M in cap space in 2018 even before they cut/restructure a couple guys.

A little bold, but if Butler leaves... I like Jonathan Jones, a lot.

The team will be fine at CB in 2018 with Gilmore, Rowe, J Jones, Bademosi and the winner of the C Jones/UDFA camp battle.

I see Belichick using a high draft pick on a safety. It's going to be time for Chung and McCourty to pass the torch soon.

Bademosi is a free agent as well and may not be cheap to re-sign. I could see some team giving him a decent contract that would be more than our offer.

This looks like the yearly thread where we all agree that we want this “under the radar” free agent who then gets paid double what we all expected.

Also, Butler's gonna be 28 by Free Agency so I really don't want him to sign a long-term extension with us - we need an infusion of youth in the secondary. I would rather draft a young CB in Rounds 1 or 2 than sign Butler. It just seems like its been a down season for Butler, and while Gilmore has also under-performed he is a year younger. Who knows, maybe we can snag the next Lattimore!

Mo Wilkerson's a guy i can see playing here next year to stick it to the jets.

Let's give Cyrus Jones a chance

More important would be singing the "next Edelman", whether through FA or draft....

Wilkerson seems to be a huge headcase. If he'd buy in he'd be a great asset to any D-Line. Just don't see the team forking the money for a 28 year old malcontent.

I'm a fan.

They'll get rid of Mcphee & Young most likely.

We have seen those guys sign for one year to prove their worth.

Dude is injuried but he's been taking too many plays off his entire career. On the cheap ... maybe but I'm looking elsewhere first & 2nd.

T. Flowers and Wise are probably a good base. Lee, with a full season of "indoctrination" could be a valuable rotational piece. Guy often plays a "heavy end" role in mixed fronts, as does A. Butler.

Hightower has done well in an OLB/DE role. Rivers, at around 250 lbs, might be good there, too. The Pats also have Keionta Davis (6030/271) on NFI, and Langi.

McClellin may or may not be back (he's under contract thru 2018).

As far as adding a FA vet, I'd be thinking older and cheaper - more a journeyman type. An extreme example might be William Hayes, age 32 and recently put on IR for a hammy.

The 'Fins traded a 6th to the Rams last season for Hayes and his $4.75M contract and he ended up being a little-used back up to rookie Charles Harris. Hayes was a reliable 45-tackles/5-sacks per year guy for the Rams for five seasons before they traded him. A guy like that might be worth the vet minimum to the Pats to have on the 90-man roster through Camp.

Anyway, there are a couple-three similar guys who are UFA in 2018, and there will likely be a couple-three others on the street from cap-cuts in Feb/March.

Kinda depends on what you consider "not cheap". Bademosi earned $1.3M this season on the 2nd year of a 2-year deal he signed with DET in 2016 (coming off his rookie contract in CLE). He turns 28 next July and has been almost exclusively a special teamer for his entire six-year career so far.

I'm skeptical that any team will be offering him CB money. I think the Pats are likely to be able to retain him on another 2-year deal for ~$2M/year ... high-end ST money, IOW.

I'm still not sure what a "number 1 corner" actually is - especially in the Pats' defense. However, if it means a guy who does "number 1" on fan expectations, it seems to me that Gilmore, Butler and Rowe have been taking turns at that.
Some fan expectations deserve to be #1ed on
