Rashaan Melvin

Where is Rashaan Melvin on our CB dept chart for a Third year guy you have to think he would be more visible. Justin Coleman is learning on the fly and have quite away to go hope he gets better over the second half. Back to Rashaan Melvin if he has played how has he looked? I cannot find a stat for him. With BB standing pat at the Trade deadline does he have high hopes for both Coleman and Melvin going forward? Melvin have some tools to work with surprised he hasn't vaulted Justin Coleman based on experience...thoughts.

Coleman's been in the system for almost 2 months and Coleman only got his chance when Brown's foot issue came up, so he was thrust in because of injury. Melvin has been in the system 2 weeks.

So book is still very well out on Melvin because he just hasn't been here that long. And it isn't like Coleman has been utterly terrible, ya he's given up some plays but he's a rookie, that's gonna happen.

Exactly.

This isn't the NBA.

There aren't many like Aqib Talib who can simply step into a new system and immediately play based on superior talent.

At LB, Bostic is another example( like Melvin) of someone I expect to see more playing time as the months turn to December and beyond.

I would go further to say that Coleman's play despite the lack of experience has been excellent. Some of that is due to outstanding safety play from McCourty, Harmon, and also Chung, who give a lot of CB protection and have been the glue in the secondary.

Josh Boyer is doing a hell of a job with our CBs. I expect him to continue to work his magic on Melvin and Coleman. The Ravens (Melvin's former team) switched their Cornerbacks coach this year. They haven't been doing well at the position aside from Webb. Jimmy Smith was supposed to be incredible but has just been average.

I watched every one of his snaps when he was with BAL vs NE in the div playoff game and I thought he did a real good job...until the double pass when they caught him in no mans land behind DA. After that, Brady started attacking him and that is never a good thing. They started shifting Gronk over to his side and he missed a couple of tackles and they started picking on him w/ JE on the slants and quick passes and the knockout blow TD pass to LaFell which IMO was still decent coverage. If he turned around he might have had a chance to bat it down. The kid had zero chance. They destroyed him.

I really think that his confidence was destroyed that game and that was the reason BAL cut him. Up to that point, he was pretty good for them. They played him a ton.

If he can learn the D, get his technique in alignment and his confidence back, I expect to see him more over the next 9 games vs taller receivers. Maybe not DEN's Thomas but be part of the scheme to slow him down.

This is an outstanding point. When you consider the lack of experience of our corners the coaching staff has done an incredible job of putting them in positions to succeed, in part by limiting their exposure and playing to their strengths. With the benefit of experience, the coaches will have more flexibility in how to use the chess pieces which gives a rather optimistic outlook.

The Ravens DO suck.
I know nothing about football because pre-season I saw the Ravens as our #1 threat for the AFCCG with Denver 2nd. Did not expect Ravens to fail or Denver to be 7-0.
Cinci maybe 3rd & Colts not a likely threat. Got the last 2 somewhat right at least.

hopefully he can be coached up and start to play a role on defense....as good as butler/ryan/coleman have been so far. would be nice to see someone else step up that we can plug in.

I agree.

From 2009 to 2011 they list him as coaching the defensive backs.

In 2012 they list him a focusing on the CBs and added Brian Flores as coaching the safeties.

I assume that BB felt both positions needed a little more focus and TLC but would be nice to know why he split the coaching responsibilities and the functions as the positional coach.

Maybe they felt that all the CBs out there who might have been acquirable in trade weren't really any better than what we have, and would have cost MORE money and a pick or some other asset, and would have had to learn a brand new system.

If we need a body they are avail as FA.

There was only one trade in the entire league. The trade deadline is still too early in the year, and this is a year where, even more than most years, most teams are still in the hunt. Hell, the Titans are 1-6, and they are only one game in the loss column out of 4th playoff position.
