Rappaport: CB Tarell Brown foot injury: [10/17 Update - - IR'ed]

Any guesses now as to why the team was so quick to IR Roberts? From reports and pics I've seen, he's been at the facility and looks good. We could use him right now. Or anyone that can add depth. Good news is that the D was humming without him and the Pats should be able to generate pressure on Luck.

Well this really stinks, but at the same time, Brown hasn't really played that much for the team to this point either. They've been utilizing Coleman outside and he has held up okay so far... Logan Ryan as the third DB is probably mostly fine if the defensive line keeps getting pressure, but if not then there will be problems. We don't know for sure about Coleman yet, and we don't know anything about Melvin in this system...

A trade seems like the only sure way to upgrade right now, but I don't know how they can afford to pay anyone who would be an upgrade. All these players on IR are killing the cap.

It's Jason McCourty time...

Twin Power!

Too much owed.

He would cost $4.4m against the cap for the remainder of the year and then if a restructure couldn't be worked out he would be a $8.8m hit next year or a $1.8m cap casualty.

Sean Smith would probably be ideal. Only $2.2m left and is a FA after this year and Chiefs are going nowhere except probably a top 5 pick now with their best player done for the year.

Edelman at this point is our #3 CB

It seemed like a good idea at the time? We're on to Indianapolis.

The whole thing with Roberts is reason why the NFL needs to fix this whole IR business.

It's a bit ridiculous that only one player, and that player has to be designated very early on, can come back from an injury later on in the season, other than being kept on and count against the 53-man roster.

It's an issue they've ignored for years and sparingly fixed here and there. How does allowing more than one injured player to return to their team without wasting a roster spot hurt things?

How much is Sean Smith owed from the Chiefs? Team going nowhere, just lost best player on O and I think Smith is in a contract year. May not cost much in terms of draft capital.

He had a great year in 2014, and seemingly would be a strong addition to the Pats if we could somehow come up with the money (I'm not minimizing that problem). However, why would Andy Reid trade him? His record has been 11-5 and 9-7, and now he is starting out at 1-4. I would think he would be scrambling to do whatever he could to turn things around in the short term (to keep his job), rather than jettisoning important assets for this year.

Of course, occasionally teams in Salary Cap Hell trade away overpriced players before the deadline, but that is a different situation, they are less of an asset if overpriced. Similarly, sometimes teams trade players that are suspended (Talib), or being a locker room headache (Moss from Oakland), but again that makes them less of a short term asset to the struggling coach.

What seems much more common just before the trade deadline is for beleaguered coaches and GM's that are performing well below expectations is to trade future considerations (that they may not care about anyway because they will be fired unless they turn things around) for a short term bandaid. Or, it is common to trade a player that may have long term potential but is struggling in the short term because of a poor scheme fit (like the Ayers trade last year and the Hicks trade this year).

I can't really think of any examples of beleaguered coaches for teams performing way below expectations trading or jettisoning important fairly priced asset before the trade deadline. Can anyone else think of examples?

1-4 and just lost their best player. They're not going anywhere this season. They took a cb in the first round of this past draft, and it doesn't sound like they're going to re-sign Smith this offseason. Get something for him while you can.

Would seem to be a good bargaining point for the NFLPA. Owners could give them something.

We need to trade for someone but the problem is that we have so little draft capital to trade. Not having a 1st next year makes our 2-4 round picks absolutely precious.

Hate to beat a dead horse but why didn't we take a CB early on in the Draft??? Yeah and I don't want to hear about the 7th Rounder we IRed! Jordan Richards better turn into the next Ed Reep or Troy P to justify that selection.

The Chiefs are bad and Jammal is really their best player, but that division is a joke and if there is a team looking good with tendencies to fallout is the Broncos. Their second half of the season is more difficult.

But Yes, with Jammal you maybe don't give up at 1-4 , without him they are 90% done.

You think he has to be Ed Reed to justify a second round pick? Your expectations do not conform with reality.

In reality we could have had Jordan Richards in the 4th or 5th. We knew we wern't going to pick up Mevis option we should have went with plan B which should have been a CB in the Second Round.

BB is known to pull the IR Trigger a little too early for my liking we could have carried him.
