Players Betting

They don't want players to get caught up in fixing games in order to earn some extra dough. So much of the NFL relies on perception. It's nothing personal, just business. The basic logic is sound. We've had players influenced by gambling concerns in the past, even refs.
This. This this this.

Look at how many idiots there already are out there right now saying the NFL is fixed. The last thing we need is players/coaches/refs getting caught up in gambling scandals.

Gambling is so much worse than beating women and children. Thats basically what the NFL is saying.
In terms of maintaining a professional sports league, it kinda really is.

Ray Rice can knock his fiancee unconscious - and we all still watch. But it was a gambling scandal which almost brought down all of MLB way back in the day. Fans won't watch if they think games are rigged.

Truth bomb: A gambling scandal can seriously damage and/or destroy a league. Beating women? Well, we're all hypocrites in that we condemn the behavior but continue to tune in.

because the players/employees have inside information that may not be readily available to the general populace... they could in theory, take advantage of things like that... kinda like how every congressman, regardless of which side of the aisle they sit, plays the stock market / commodities / futures etc and always, some how for whatever reason (/s) seem to profit...

NFL players have inside info on the NBA? - too funny.

Even if you bet on your team to win, you can play half-*** in order to cover the spread. A player can easily miss a tackle or drop a pass in a game on purppurpose...or
Or throw a stupid end of game lateral...

What was the spread on the Pat's game against the Raiders let year? Did the Raiders cover....hmmm.

Not a player but it's only a matter of time before another Tim Donaghy is found in the NFL officiating crew. IMO.
That f___er Donaghy cost my boy Steve Nash a championship!

i misread your post ... but all in all, its a small world professional sports

If all of professional sports is so small, there are going to be a lot of NBA players getting really really rich this Fall.

I highly doubt it.

Or losing a lot of money... It's always a gamble... Never a sure thing... Just ask Pete Rose

Couple of factors that to me make it acceptable to ban betting by players inside team facilities. First is basic premise that the employer has the right to determine code of conduct expected of employees while at work. If you’re at work you should be focused on work, not distracted by anything else. My employer does not allow viewing porn while at work. Nor is gambling allowed in our workplace. I see no reason players and other team employees should get special treatment in this.
Unions all get special treatment - that is why they pay union dues. The employment agreement is between the union and the NFL, not with any employees. I see not equivalency in your first factor.
Second is practical. My professional gig is cybersecurity. I know how my employer monitors for prohibited activity within our facilities. I’d expect the NFL has equal technology. It’s much easier to detect activity going to a bookmaker and say “that’s bad” than it is to detect that activity and then have to figure out if it was an allowed bet on an NBA game or prohibited activity like a player betting on NFL games or even just sharing game plan information in return for special treatment by the bookie. Much easier for teams to wash their hands of it by prohibiting any betting related activity in their facilities. That takes them off the hook. Whatever a player does outside team facilities is the player’s responsibility not the team’s.
If I was in the NFL players union, I really couldn't care less about difficulties in cybersecurity for the NFL to spy on me.

you seriously think the Union would strike over this? Really?

if not your arguments are totally specious. Owners have no reason to budge, and good reasons not to.

I said this when they started getting in bed with the gambling sites. You can not sleep with the devil and then tell your employees not to do it!!

Everyone involved with the NFL, should be prohibited from any and all sports wagering. It’s the only way to try and keep the genie in the bottle. I’m sure that NFL players know and hang out with NBA players (and other Pros). What is to stop them from placing bets relying on inside info (player x is hurt, or player B is sick.

Once the fans think that the game is compromised because of gambling, the NFL will lose everything.

We need Judge Landis here, there can be no wiggle room. The penalties MUST be dracorain.

I would be surprised if less than 80% of the players did not bet on games. I get the whole don’t bet at work and on the NFL. Employers rules and have to play by them. Doesn’t matter if they promote it or advertise the hell out of it in their stadium etc. Getting fined for breaking said rules is warranted but what they’re doing is a bit draconian and may be that way for a reason. /shrug. If I was filthy rich like these kids I’d probably get in on the action as well. What I would like to see is what exactly they’re betting on and what the payouts are…

You are changing the discussion. Have a nice 4th of July weekend.

The NFL players should be able to bet on anything outside the NFL. Suspensions for betting on the NBA, if legal, are absurd.
But those players are getting suspended for betting at an NFL facility. I'm fine with that. The NFL says no betting for players at an NFL facility and they chose to bet at an NFL facility.

There are plenty of things that are perfectly legal outside of my workplace that are banned on site at my workplace.

Agreed. But that does not mean there might be things banned at other workplaces that shouldn't be. Especially workplaces where you want players to show up voluntarily all off-season. Different situations, different rules and needs.
