Pick 250: Pats select Ryan Izzo TE Florida St

I'm sure at pick 250 the Pats were expecting another Gronk? Evidently they see something there that they think they can work with. If not, he disappears like most 5th and 7th rounders. The fodder roster has a lot of players on it. All good players or they wouldn't have been drafted or picked up as free agents. Whether or not they 'stick' is up to them, not the coaching staff. If he can learn, is smart, and is coachable, he might have a shot at a roster spot. I can't but help rooting for these guys as everything is a lot of work for them and their dream is to play pro football. Besides I know of another Izzo that was pretty well thought of on this team and he worked his arse off to stay on the roster.

I wasn't expecting a Gronk at pick 250. With these kind of picks I prefer when they draft either high upside athletes or narrow skill set players who may be able to carve out a role by doing a few things very well or higher ranked prospects with some kind of red flag.

I don't believe this player is any of those. Maybe he turns into something but I don't feel like they picked a guy who has the highest chance to do that or has a ceiling worth rolling the dice on. That's all. I could be completely wrong. Like I said it's just my impression from what I saw.

Draft Scout said he compares to this former Patriot:

I love BB's Seventh Rounders and not his Second Rounders...go figure. I like Izzo's style nice effort guy who could surprise I love his Size and he can move some. Can't wait to see him in camp good health to you Izzo.

block

lead block

PP

from what i saw he has some rec. skills to work with + he's tough, not afraid to rec. underneath and showed some solid YAC ability/attitude

Couldn't agree more on the Scouting report I think Izzo is going to be good.

Honestly I just don't see any upside here. He is an okay blocker but not amazing, he loses or it's a stalemate a fair amount of time which is not what you want to see in a TE you draft for blocking. His hands seem good but he won't scare anyone as a pass catcher i think.

I just see this as a camp body to be honest.

He may already be a bit better blocker than Hollister was at the end of last season.

A better blocker than Hollister "The Wall-ister"? The best blocking TE of all time???? No way!

I would wager he is a better blocking TE right now.

Smells like a Legacy-based rather than a talent-based selection, an example of Bill doing the son of an old buddy a solid.

There were better players available, even at 250, than Larry Junior.

Larry Izzo's not quite old enough to be his dad, but they could be cousins.

My mom was born the same year as Larry and I was born the same year as Ryan, so it's not too far fetched, especially since NFL players love to multiply early and often. That said...

Seems a bit of a bold and premature statement given that I couldn't find any evidence that the two guys are or are not related. But that's the Capn for ya.

He got a tight name though.

Poor job of trolling. It's not Larry's son.

Try harder

He's from the town over of where I grew up (and two towns from where I live now) so I am hopeful for big things. If not for any other reason, to show the kids around here that you can make it to the NFL.

"Izzo" is a fairly common surname in Italy and in parts of the U.S, especially in the Northeast. I'd guess there are between 5,000 and 10,000 people in the U.S. with that same last name. The odds aren't extremely high that they're even second cousins.

There's this:

Florida State tight end Ryan Izzo’s family inspires his tireless work ethic

And then there's this:

Lawrence Leonard Izzo's Obituary on Houston Chronicle

(another "Larry" Izzo).

Approximately 5 minutes on Google.

So, are you saying that if this Izzo isn't another Gronk, the Pats can still probably find one among the thousands of Izzos in the US - and Italy?
