PFT PRESEASON POWER RANKINGS: NO. 6

We're down to a half-dozen teams. And the flak we took for dropping the Dolphins at No. 7 would have been 1000 times worse if we'd made Nick Saban's unit any higher than our No. 6 team.

The New England Patriots.
Yes, the gap between these two franchises has gotten that thin that quickly. The Fins have improved, the Pats have taken an inevitable dip toward the rest of a solid AFC field.

But the Pats will be within the top ten and hovering near the best five for as long as Tom Brady is playing.

If he's healthy.

And at a time when there is plenty of focus on the condition of quarterbacks like Donovan McNabb (hernia), Ben Roethlisberger (face), Carson Palmer (knee), and Daunte Culpepper (knee), it's been easy to forget that Brady had offseason surgery for a hernia of his own that was expertly concealed for most of the 2005 season.

...

Can the Pats get back to the Super Bowl? Yes. Even with all of the injuries the Patriots suffered in 2005, they easily could have gotten past the Broncos in the divisional round of the playoffs, and New England then would have hosted Pittsburgh for the AFC championship game.

With the tandem of coach Bill Belichick and V.P. of player personnel Scott Pioli still in place, and with Brady at the helm of the offense, the Pats will continue to be a Super Bowl threat in 2006, and in every other season in which those three guys are associated with the franchise.

...

Quick!! E-mail this disrespect to Rodney!!!

So that means we're rated below? I can't remember all the rankings but Pitt and Indy, for sure. Then, maybe, Cincy, Seattle. And who else? Carolina?

Well, it's difference of opinion that makes horse races ...

They rated Cincy somewhere around 15.

IIRC, the last 5 teams are Seattle, Pittsburgh, Carolina, Indy, and Denver.

They'll probably shake out like this:

5 - Denver
4 - Indy
3 - Carolina
2 - Seattle
1 - Pittsburgh

Excellent!

I was almost hoping they'd rank the Fins ahead of us for the bulletin board material factor

The fact that they have 5 teams in front of us should be good motivation nonetheless

I'm thinking they go Seatle #1 though - giving them props for playing better football in the Super Bowl than the Super Bowl champions

did any of you notice what they wrote about the TE position? maybe there isn't one individual who grabs in Gates-like numbers, but suggesting that TE isn't an important part of our passing game is a joke

Miami has made up some ground from a year ago, I'm not surprised that PFT has us ranked just below the the Patriots. Saban is building a winner, and he's just getting started. Wait until he gets a few more drafts under his belt, and has the Phinz roster to his liking. Miami has a bright future under Saban, just as the Pats have had under Belichick....

Well they did term it "fantasy rankings" on the positions - and looking at Graham's numbers and Watson's numbers those just don't stack up

I think we all know BB has always WANTED to feature the TE game - but for various reasons debated ad naseum around here, has never achieved it

From a fantasy standpoint - not that I bother with that Watson, Thomas ad Graham (in that order I believe) as well as Mills represent TREMENDOUS value given where you can draft them and what they'll produce.

I expect Watson to have above average fantasy numbers (55-65 receptions) and Thomas and Graham to both be around 30-40 with Mills chipping in 20-30

Collectively that's about 150 receptions for our TEs...

sure I'm weighing that a little heavy given the lack of WRs but still - I'd call that pretty good TE production
