PFT: Bill "has shopped" Mac

How many teams can he go to with a reasonable shot of winning the starting job? If Zappe's as bad as some of you think, seems his best shot is right here.

I would say he would have a shot with at least half the league. You may have been spoiled by Brady, but there is a talent deficit at QB in this league. Based on Jones' 2021 season, which is really all we have to go off of because of the offensive disaster of last year, he is better than half the league.

Also we have to keep in mind that mac does not have a jamarr chase / justin jefferson / aj brown/ tyreek hill / travis kelce type weapon at his disposal so hes obviously not going to carry a team on his shoulders or put up outstanding numbers.

In his rookie year when he had an actual oc he was probably somewhere around 12-15 on my qb rankings, then of course last year happened and he was towards the bottom. So he definitely has alot more to prove, but at the same time hes performed about whered id have hoped for realistically given his surroundings. Not enough data to declare anything either way.
Yes! Having players like that makes all the difference. Ownership mentioned mentioned that they would like to take the eagles approach and surround him with playmakers... ok who is the AJ brown is what I'd ask? But yes your right he does have more to prove. Last year thinking back on it was so frustrating because had BOB or any functioning OC would have had this offense I'm much better shape.. heck it was even reported by seasons end BB himself was calling plays!

I'd say 6 or 7 he has a shot

1. Baltimore (if Lamar leaves, but if he does than it's probably to a team below which takes Mac out of the running there).

2. Tampa Bay

3. Bears (a shot, but tough)

4. Washington

5. Denver (but really no chance with that contract)

6. Houston

7. Falcons

You forgot plenty: Carolina (assuming they want to sit their rookie a year), Arizona, New Orleans, Indy, Tennessee, maybe Las Vegas (depending on whether Josh would rather have Jones over Jimmy), maybe San Fran. There are probably a few others.

I agree to a great extent , but last season with self inflicted wounds opens up lots of questions
Which get answered by hiring an OC and an OL coach, IMO.

and this barrage of trade talk around Mac could be stopped by saying no !
Who knows with the media, a denial could very well create the opposite effect, i.e. the media will think there must be something to it if they're going out of their way to deny it.

But there is silence which means there is truth to it !
WHAT?

And a team trying to trade a first rounder after technically 1 season where he took them to the post season doesn't look good.
Right, which is a major reason to reach the conclusion this is all nonsense being spun by the media, it just doesn't make sense to trade away a talented rookie QB.

Mac might not be the future . But at least we need to see what we have in him . We shouldn't end up like chargers who gave up on Drew Brees . Again I am not saying Mac is drew Brees but Mac is supposed to be intelligent and we don't seem to have built a game plan to take advantage of that and see his true ceiling . This is the year to evaluate that and we are not making things easy for Mac or for the patriots .
I agree this is a key year for Mac. This year we have a new OC, a new OL coach and what I see as upgrades throughout the offense. Let's see how he does instead of spreading nonsense like he is afraid of competing with Bailey Zappe.

The Hoyer release is confusing given his contract being guaranteed but supposedly he questioned last years coaching if rumours are to be believed
Hoyer is 37 years old and just spent more than half the season on IR due to concussions.

He also wasn't very good when he did get a chance to play before being concussed.

Whatever value his experience had on showing Mac the ropes has already been taken advantage of.

Meanwhile, Josh is trying to install his program and his culture in LV so he thinks Hoyer has some value.

So, good for Hoyer, that man has really cashed in on his relatively limited talent, but we're done with him here.

Yeah, but Perry and others like Dan Patrick have also reported that they've spoken to several players and found many of them wanted the Pats to keep starting Zappe. So it probably depends who you ask and what story you want to run with.
Dan Patrick served up a nothing burger.

He went through intermediaries who reported significant support in the locker room for Zappe. But there’s no way of saying those same players would not also say they support Mac if asked about that.

The whole picking sides thing is going to destroy civilization, not just the Pats. But we don’t have to rush to buy into it.

I'll give you Indy, you're right. Still think Arizona goes another year with the midget. Tennessee I'd see as doubtful but maybe. Las Vegas and New Orleans have the QBs they want.

San Fran he might get a few games to start the season if Lance and Purdy are still out. But they wouldn't touch Mac. They'd make themselves look like complete idiots to drop 3 firsts on Lance, have Purdy following the year he had, and instead go with the guy they could have drafted in the first place with their own pick.

We're now at 7-8, nowhere near over half the league.

Murray may not even play this year. Word is that they already regret giving him that deal. Jones could come in on a rookie contract and offset the massive mistake of Murray's deal.

And you do not know that McDaniels wanted Garoppolo over Jones. Garoppolo was available. And he got a three year deal below market value that they can get out of after the first year. That doesn't sound like McDaniels got "the QB they wanted". Looking at his contract, Garoppolo is the QB for right now, not necessarily for the future or even next year. And I think the Raiders may find out that Jimmy was more of a product of the Shanahan system.

And you don't know if the 49ers wouldn't touch Mac. In fact, Shanahan reported wanted Mac and was talked out of it. After two years, he would probably be happy to trade Lance for Jones straight up.

And I am talking about Jones with the only year we can evaluate the guy. And he was definitely a top half of the league QB. Unfortunately, because of Belichick and Patricia, there is no way we can properly evaluate the guy from last year.

Interesting point about Murray. I looked at the contract and they can kinda get out of it without too much pain with a trade after June 1st. They save a couple million on the cap this year and then take a $47M dead cap hit in 2024 - which sucks - but they'd be out from under the deal. The team that trades for Murray would have him on a guaranteed $2M salary in 2023 and guaranteed $35M salary in 2024, and then the rest of the years are non-guaranteed salaries with annual roster bonuses between $11M and $17M. So if they aren't thrilled with him after 2024 they can cut or trade him and not take any hit. Some team would probably send a 4th rounder or something to try out Murray for a couple seasons for a total guaranteed investment of $39M (less than $20M per year). Arizona could offset the huge 2024 dead cap hit from that trade by acquiring Jones or drafting a rookie QB at #3 overall. Either one is cheap for the next couple seasons.

Who will be #1000 on this never ending inane discussion that is based purely on speculation and information from reporters/sportstalkers...
Just 64 more posts to that magic number..

I don't get how anyone can be a staunch defender based off of what we have seen so far. What is it that has you sold? What do opposing defenses/defensive coordinators have to worry about when it comes to Mac? What is a "signature" game from Mac? I don't hate the kid and I don't really think there is much difference between him and Zappe but I don't know how anyone can be all in on either of them.
Setting NCAA records for completion percentage and QBR and having a historically great rookie season are the reasons for optimism. A terrible regression in his 2nd season is the reason for pessimism.

Yes

He left the Pats to not travel so much and spend more time home.
We're lucky the team still keeps him in the loop about negative developments! Do they have like a weekly conference call to share all the dirt?

In his rookie year he was 13th in DVOA and 16th in QBR, far better than any of the other rookie QB's. In 2022 he fell to 26th in DVOA and 30th in QBR.

He was still much better by those measures than Wilson, Mills and Fields. Trevor Lawrence went from awful in his rookie year to 6th in DVOA and 15th in QBR. In his case, no one doubts his rookie season was ruined by the clown show in Jax.

Meanwhile, Tua, who played with almost the same cast at Alabama as Mac, in 2021 (his 2nd year) was 18th in DVOA and 18th in QBR. Last year, with new weapons and a coach who believed in him, he was 2nd in DVOA and 3rd in QBR.

I think it's quite trollish to assert that it is impossible for Mac to be as good as Tua (hopefully minus the concussions).

We'll see.
