On May 10 ProFootballTalk.Com reported that the “The Patriots…made the May 9 tender to running back LeGarrette Blount. The offer amounts to 110 percent of his total pay in 2016, which was $1 million.”

What does this mean for the Patriots and its 2016 leading rusher, LeGarrette Blount?

This move is being widely referred to as "a May 9th tender". I've seen at least a few people interpret this to mean that it was an option that could only have been exercised on May 9th, and not before.

I had assumed that the date was merely the deadline for exercising an option that had been available since the start of free agency, although the common reference does beg the question.
