Pats worked out Shaun Ellis

Wait, we cant work out Ellis, the board has decided that BB is changing to a 1 gap 43 defense.

If that was the case than why do so many posters want the Pats to bring in Matt Roth? Dude has never played in a 43.

You mean maybe people are speculating? Like maybe BB will actually play 2 gap like he has his entire career? I don't know, there are a lot of lines out there to read between that say otherwise.

please quote them itt. I have yet to see anybody say that we aren't going to use any two gap this season.

Many posters are saying the base defense is changing to a 1 gap 43.

even if we did do you honestly think the 34 would disappear? With the personnel that Bill has acquired over the past 6 years an absolute change to a successful 43 would be impossible.

Personally, I would pass on Ellis. He is up there in age and wasn't particularly good last year (even his playoff game vs. the Pats was a bit overrated because at least one of his sacks was a coverage sack).

The only reason I would want him to sign would be to piss off Jets fans.

I am being sarcastic. I do not believe we will abandon the 2 gap. It doesnt matter much to me whether we line up in 34 or 43, but we've accumulated 34 personell for years, and have a grand total of 1 new front 7 player.
It appears many posters think that BB will cater to whatever Hayneswroth wants to be able to do, and I just find that silly.

The only reason I even believe that is possible of a change in defensive philosophy is because Michael Holley, Troy Brown, and Tedy Bruschi believe it based on what they have seen. I wouldn't believe it otherwise.

I meant to say that you think they really think the 34 will disappear? I think with some of the players they've brought in for workouts and camp reports show that the team is probably moving towards more 43 fronts. Like I said before, who knows what the base defense will look like come next season.

I disagree with the tea leaves you are reading.
They brought in Brock, IMO as a sub package rusher.
They brought in Roth, a 34 player.
They brought in Ellis, a 34 player.

We have been acquiring players for years for a 34 2 gap defense. We have added 1 single front 7 player.
Unless BB decided at this point in his career it would be a good idea to sign an underachieving player and let him choose the defensive scheme, I don't get where the evidence adds up to the conclusion. We play 43 early in camp more years than not.

He is a solid 2 gap run defending 34 DE. We need one of those. Even if for depth.
Right now, assuming we play 50/50 base/sub. I expect Wilfork to play mostly in the base, and Haynesworth to play about equally between the 2, but probably around 60% of the snaps. We still need the other DE in the base, and the 3rd DE to spell Haynesworth and whoever that is.
Right now it looks to me like:

Base
Brace Wilfork Haynesworth
with Wright backing up the DEs and playing inside in the sub

Adding Ellis to that upgrades the rotation in the base.

Even for those convinced we are going to a 43, we would still be using 3 '34 DL' on the 4 man line to go with a Cunningham, Moore, etc at the other DE.

so what you're telling me is that the addition of Haynesworth alone is the reason that Bruschi, Warren, Reiss, etc. are making a big deal out of this thing? One player? We will see come time the season starts but I think we will see more 43 fronts than last season.

I am saying there has been 1 single solitary addition to the front 7. That is a fact. I couldn't begin to speculate on what reason those people are speculating.
I do know that it is speculation, because BB certainly isn't going to tell them, and I do know Ive seen or heard nothing this year that I haven't seen or heard many other years that ended up in a 2gap 34.

fair enough, when the season starts we'll have some concrete evidence

Ellis was drafted as a 4/3 DE and played half his career in the 4/3, until Mangini.

.

Ellis went to 2 pro bowls as a 4/3 DE

Exactly. Regardless of how that question turns out lets hope we keep upgrading the talent. Ellis and Roth would be nice additions.

His fallback plan was to apparently bring back Cromartie.
