Pats sign yet ANOTHER WR

It looks like this kid was tail end Charlie for the Chiefies and was released to make room for changes the Chiefs were making vice any problem with his play. Given who he's compared to in his scouting report, BB could be looking for someone who can get the RAC yards Donte' was capable of getting. The Pats used Donte' much differently than previous teams...

DONTE' STALLWORTH-Philadelphia...Like Stallworth, Price is a slippery runner who might not have the strength to power through the press or break many tackles, but he has the loose hips, second gear and wiggle to elude. His best ability is to drive off the coverage and come back for the short ball. With his sharp change of direction, he quickly separates after the catch. Price has never faced anything other than marginal competition and needs to fill out his frame more, but he has soft, natural hands and with his nifty foot moves, he can make things happen with the ball in his hands.

01/15/07 - The Nation's leading receiver, Maurice Price, announced Monday that he has decided to forgo his senior season and enter the NFL Draft. Price and fellow Buccaneer Collin Drafts are in California working out, having signed with agent Bert Briones. Price led all of Division I football in receiving last year with 103 receptions, becoming just the seventh player in Division I-AA history to record more than 100 receptions in a single season. Over the past two seasons, Price ranks third in receiving, trailing only Davonne Bess (Hawaii) and David Ball (New Hampshire). His 175 receptions over that time rank him ahead of receivers such as Dwayne Jarrett (USC) and Calvin Johnson (Georgia Tech). During his three years at Charleston Southern, Price became the all-time leader, at CSU and in the Big South, in receptions and receiving yards. Price also set the League mark for games with at least 10 receptions, doing so in five contests. Following his outstanding junior campaign, Price was named to the Associate Press All-American team, The Sports Network All-American second-team, and was named to the College Sporting News Fabulous 50 FC All-Star team. Price has worked out just one weekend, but the 6-1.5, 196 pounder has already run a 4.4 40-yard dash, and had an impressive 11 foot broad jump. - CSU Sports

09/12/08 - WR Maurice Price cleared waivers and re-signed with the Chiefs’ practice squad. Price was waived earlier in the week to open a roster spot for practice squad player Marques Hagans, a receiver who played quarterback in college and can serve as an emergency guy.

Excellent, any idea why he was let go by the WR heavy Chiefs ?

They signed him because 'The PRICE was right' LOL

The Sept 12 item in my post mentions WR Marques Hagans being needed as QB depth - I thought he was with Miami, but maybe I missed a roster shake-up down south.

Am I the only one who believes that perhaps Price was simply signed to take over Washington's place on special teams, and will be cut as soon as Washington's ankle is healed?

We signed a Stallworth type WR-this is good news if that's the case!

Probably not, I'm sure there are others. Still one can hardly argue that Special Teams was the problem Sunday - it really could be the Pats want someone who can recreate those big RAC plays Donte' gave them last year - short routes, quick passes, make someone miss for extra yardage.

True, that's a good point. But if that's the case, then who gets less passes in his direction? Gaffney? Watson/Thomas?

Donte could be explosive, short, fast routes, tough runner too. A player like that could help Cassel out a lot, especially with Moss always being doubled up now.

Well he was just cut from the Chiefs' practice squad on Friday (he spent the first two weeks of this season on the 53 and all of last season on the Chiefs' IR after going undrafted), so when I first saw the headline "Pats sign Maurice Price" tonight, I immediately thought it was to the practice squad. A little bit surprising that he'd go to the 53, but you have to remember there's still almost two weeks until the Pats play again and it's no guarantee he'll still be on the roster by then.

As Pats1 points out, he still needs to work in a few practices and pick things up. As for who might lose playing time...tough to say, we all thought Jordan's presence meant fewer reps for Morris, but that hasn't really been the case. He will probably be limited to certain plays and formations if he is used offensively to emulate Stallworth's play. I don't see him cutting too much into anyone's time initially.

another dumb move.

IMO, this is another of BB's situational football things.

The game plan restricts Cassel to short passes, and this is a David Givens type WR. Stronger than most WR, and able to get a few YsAC.

With Moss taking two defenders down the field every play, this guy and Welker run short routes for three-four yards, and get 3-4 more yards after first contact.

I have a news flash for you, he won't see the field chief.

Maybe they need someone else to stretch the field and open things up a bit more for the O.

Not to get off topic, but I thought that Donte used his strength very effectively. Remember how he threw that defender on a big run in big D last year?

Eh, who really knows why they signed him. To ask why he was just signed while Chad was cut, or to point out that he got cut from a lot of bottom feeder teams, is to ignore the complexities of pro football signings that happen on the margin. It just really isn't as simple as that.

Of course, I make no claim to having any idea behind this move... I'm just sayin'. And as it has been pointed, who knows if he'll end on the PS, be cut in 2 days, etc. I'd be shocked if he saw any playing time at all, even on ST. By the time regular season NFL squads are formed, you rarely hear about guys coming out of the woodwork to make big impacts... otherwise, they'd already be on one of the 32 squads. How often do you hear an announcer go, "and that's the 3rd TD catch for XYZ this game, giving him a total of 165 yards... can you believe this team picked him off the street just last week?" Aside from major trades (e.g., a veteran QB), the core of this team is set, and this is pretty meaningless, IMO... a guy you'd probably never hear about if we didn't exist in a media cycle that analyzes every transaction the team makes.

He'll get a look see at special teams. Maybe he'll still be here for Game Four. May be not.

He's a gunner. We just got Aiken back, but Alexander and Washington are both still out. We sign a player at the end of the roster and we immediately start comparing him to Stallworth. We really should get a grip. I don't expect this guy to make the field as a wide receiver in the next few weeks, even if was the LEADING receiver in the country in college. If he sticks around, he will be given a chance in next year's camp.

BTW, Aiken did have a catch on Sunday.

I still think the person most vulnerable with all the STers being tried out is Slater, but not for now.

i wonder if they think he can be a Cornerback. they had 6 or 7 in sometime in the past few days, and none were signed. maybe the front office sees something in this guy

The Patriots use the back end of their roster (particularly the 53rd man) differently than most teams in the league. The Pats 53rd guy usually plays and is usually a specialist needed for a certain game (or games). In the past it's been an extra dlineman, this year it's been an extra tight end or wide receiver. Stephen Spach might be re-signed again this year (like TE Rivers was a revolving door last year), when the Patriots decide they need a 3rd TE. Eckel is on call for RB depth, and CJ Jones probably would be brought back if the Punt Return depth got short. This essentially gives the Patriots a deeper roster than most teams as they mix and match that last spot on the roster while most teams stay with a consistent 53 unless their is an injury. My guess is that Price was signed because Aiken is still working his way back and Washington is injured. Aiken got snaps at WR and on special teams against Miami and maybe the staff feels he's not ready for both roles at this point. Or it could be simple as the Patriots need an extra WR to run routes during the bye week while Moss (who's had the back injury), Welker (ribs earlier in preseason) and Gaffney (some injury I can't recall) take a few less. By this time next week, the Patriots could decide they need an additional safety or corner...who knows?
