Chris Dunlap is feeling very good about his chances.

LOL!! Yeah right. He's feeling good about his chances of beating out Childress or Kight for the pracice squad.

It will not shock me to see one or two of these WRs traded during preseason, IMO. There is not enough room on this roster for all of these WRs.

Moss, Stallworth, Welker, Washington, Jackson, Gaffney, Caldwell, Smith, Childress and now Dunlap. Not to mention the potential signing of Troy Brown.
Did I miss anyone?

Why would anyone trade for someone that is most likely to be cut or they could sign off the practice squad?

You never know. I never thought that we would get anything for Gorin, but somebody was willing to give up a pick for him.

Someone like Caldwell isn't likely to be cut but we could well take a lowish pick for him and keep the next guy. For the acquiring team it would be cheap and also they would likely get to pay him less than if he were on the open market - plus be sure to get him.

That DB pool is getting deep, I think Poland makes it 18 competing for 9-10 spots. Nice to get another young WR to battle for the Practice Squad.

Dunlap is young and also a return guy....Poland is a big time tackler...smart and savvy..Always good to have a lot of players to choose from..Looks like Vincent (like Baker) did not make it...

Tomase...

The 6-foot-1, 227-pounder played a hybrid of safety and linebacker at Air Force. The 2006 graduate didn’t receive a look after going undrafted, however, and his career appeared done until the Pats came calling after seeing tape of him.

Poland had been working out while fulfilling his Air Force commitment as an aircraft maintenance officer at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas.

He is currently on leave while trying out. It will be another year before he transitions to the reserves.
I wonder how much leave he has on the books...I also wonder if he'll wind up on the Reserve/Military list the way Eckel did when Miami scooped him.

That's the only real reason to trade for a guy who's likely to be cut--as you said, it keeps him off the open market.

Also, you can get him before the end of camp. A guy like Caldwell, for instance, could probably go somewhere and start right away as long as he gets enough reps before game 1. That has to be worth a day 2 pick imo.

Poland won't have to go on that if he makes the practice squad. But we'll see what happens.
He's currently on active duty with the Air Force, I'm sure he got permission to participate in Rookie Camp, but I'd be surprised if the Pats have already negotiated a deal with the Air Force for a kid in for a tryout (it was easier to negotiate with Navy for Eckel since he was unassigned coming out of the Academy). Poland most likely has enough leave to allow him to participate in the off-season program and Mini-Camp, but after that he either goes on the Reserve/Military list or gets cut. Since he's already filling a billet for the Air Force, I'd be surprised if they were ready to lose him to the NFL. Putting him on the Reserve/Military list works since he is apparently eligible to transfer to the AF Reserve next year.
