Oct. 5 vs. Cincinnati: Jerome Boger — 12 penalties, 114 yards (Bengals — 4 penalties, 37 yards)
Oct. 12 at Buffalo: Walt Coleman — 9 penalties, 60 yards (Bills — 8 penalties, 107 yards)
Oct. 16 vs. Jets: Bill Leavy — 9 penalties, 64 yards (Jets — 7 penalties, 70 yards)

Is there any kind of correlation here between penalties and wins/losses? If so, please let me know, and I'll promptly get tested for cataracts.

I'm figuring on Browner as a given for 2-3 holding penalties a game, and with everything else he brings to the table, I am sooooo good with that.

Checked about a week ago and statistically there is not much difference for the league between 2013 and 2014... but it certainly seems like more...

We are way ahead of last year..

As was Baltimore the year they won.

Seattle was #1 last year (Denver was #7)

Some think this gives some credence to the refs let them play for the most part in the post-season.

A few notes:
--Weekly penalty totals dropped from a high in week 1 of 222 to 181 and 184 in weeks 4 and 5, respectively, a sign that fewer total calls have been made the deeper into the season we've gone.
--Defensive PI has been all over the place: low of 6 in week four, high of 18 in week three, average of 11.8 a week which is way down from the 16.6 weekly average in the first five weeks of 2013.
--Defensive holding has been consistent though dropping slightly: 15, 13, 18, 10, 11 the first five weeks (13.4 on average). In 2013 the average was 8.8.
--So while D holding calls are up ~5 calls per week, it's come at the expense of the more costly DPI calls (down ~5 calls per week). I think it's a good sign for the league, though I think Browner is the type of guy who'll get more holding calls than DPI so probably a bad thing for the Patriots going forward.

So all that said, the Patriots are 2nd in the NFL in penalties against this season (Pittsburg at 80, Pats at 79, then a big drop to Buffalo and SF at 68). They're 'tops' in the league in penalty yards against (699, Pittsburg at 643 is second). In terms of calls for/against, Seattle is worst at a net of -29, NE second worst at -24, and NE is also second-worst in net yards (-204, STL at -245 is worst).

The amazing thing is the Pats already have more penalties (79 vs 75) and more penalty yards (699 vs 675) than their entire 2013 season.

I do think they need to clean up the penalties, but it's not just holding and DPI that's hurting them. They have 17 false starts, league average is 9.72. A total of 12 face mask + OPI + Unnecessary roughness, league average for those three is 5.53. They'll likely stay above average in DPI + defensive holding but that's the product of an aggressive defense, what they need to focus on is the lazy/stupid penalties they've been docked with this season, imo.

Yeah, I look at his penalties like 2-3 short completions for first downs that the receiver will pay for dearly.
