Most of the good QB's who have played in the NFL started out as back ups, including Kurt Warner who just got in the HOF. The short list I gave were the rule not the exception, so I don't buy your argument that JG is just a "back up".
Now I'm of the belief that some sort of #1 pick plus others SHOULD be the deal they can accept simply because THAT is what the market seems to be for a QB you project to be likely to become your franchise guy. Just look at what teams have already done to get to that guy. From RGIII to the Vikings QB, so why not JG. Also JG's value is inflated this year because of the existence of a very weak QB class. With the exception perhaps Shanahan, any HC who picks a QB high in the first round is unlikely to still be there when and if that QB ever pans out.
I don't think any fan base who roots for a team that desperately needs a QB would rather have some college kid (at any position) than JG. Maybe the 2nd or 3rd pick might be enough, but any lower IMHO would require additional picks.
And as I've said the most doable deal I see, is to the Bears for the 34th pick this year and a 3rd or 4th, plus their first and 7th next year.
BTW- it just occurred to me. Since Roger stole the Seattle 4th round pick from us, what would happen if the Pats get a 4th round pick in trade, to they take that one too, or do they give us back the Seattle pick and take the one that's higher. Just a thought
