This is a good link on Simmons trying to get back in the league after an achillies surgery ended his season last year. Supposedly, a full year is necessary for recovery, which would probably make Simmons healthy by week 5 or 6 of this year...depending on when he had his surgery.

My guess is the Patriots are looking at him as an option if one of the starting guards were to go down.
