Pats get CB Aqib Talib from the Bucs !!

Thats fine, I'm just not sure what you are using to back it up. There really aren't any facts that say so.

I think the best possible secondary they could field would be:

CB1: Talib
CB2: Dennard
NB: Cole
S: McCourty
S: Gregory/Wilson

So does Bedard, apparently. We'll see soon enough.

I would go
LCB McCourty
RCB Talib
NB Dennard
S/S Wilson/Chung/Gregory
Dime: Cole

Interesting that you have an unproven rookie starting at corner and a guy who was 6th on the cb depth chart now the nickel while you put the best corner we have at safety.
I wouldn't use Bedard's analysis to tout your opinion, he has not proven to be correct very often.
But you are right. We see it very differently, and time will tell.

And you have an unproven rookie starting at safety, while I choose to take our best cornerback (and ideally, Talib is really our best cornerback) and transition him to become our best cover safety. Simply a matter of prioritizing resources to best cover the existing deficiencies.

Is anyone else concerned that the Patriots brought in an all-around bad guy? Ochocinco, Moss, Haynesworth, Dillon- the issues with these guys were mild compared to Talib. Talib is nearing Pacman Jones territory here.

Just in terms of "winning at all costs", I hope that the franchise does not begin to dig up the scum of the earth because they are desperate. Frankly, when the Jets beat us in 2010, I felt the sting was much less because we had a great group of guys while they were infested with real-life dirt bags like Cromartie, Holmes, and Edwards. I think there is a difference between locker room cancers and guys that show up in the headlines for violence and overall danger to society.

I'm planning to make my 1.5 year old daughter a big Patriots fan, and whether they win or lose, you can always be proud to be a fan of Mr. Kraft's franchise. I really don't want to be explaining to her why one of her favorite players assaulted his wife, got a DUI, fired a gun at someone, or punched a cab driver in the head.

I realize that our perception of a lot of these player is skewed, and in reality most of them are not saints, but I think the Talib signing is out of character. This isn't like Alfonzo Dennard where a kid makes a mistake... this is a 26-year old violent criminal who has been given everything he needs to succeed but is a rotten person. I feel like we just made a deal with the devil.

Who is with me???

A few comments in response to your post.

-If you raise your daughter to think that it is appropriate to look down on and shun people who make mistakes, even after they have suffered the consequences what are you expecting when she makes a mistake?

-You said you wanted her to be proud of "Mr Kraft's team" win or lose. You really have no idea of Kraft's personal life, morality, or ethics. Many people out there would think he is a terrible role model because he is a money grubbing capitalist. Many were assailing the owners during the lock out (IIRC you were heavily on the players side) as cheap scum who would ruin the game for a buck. You would not have such a high opinion of "Mr Kraft" if the franchise continued to lose as much after he bought it as they did before.

-Talib is a football player. If you really are going to raise your daughter to make football players role models of character, you should reconsider. Will you ban television in your house so she doesn't see the actors who committed crimes? Is music out because of the 'unacceptable lifestyle' that allowing her to listen would force you to explain about the musicians? They are football players.

-I recognize the outlook of a parent of a 1 1/2 year old and the world you see through their eyes is very different than the real world they end up in as teenagers and young adults, but your post essentially adds up to wanting to hide Talib or anyone like them from your daughter and either pretend they don't exist or that they aren't good enough for you. That will cause greater danger than seeing a corner who was once arrested pick off a pass.

I feel cover skills at corner are more valuable than at safety.
MCcourty is a corner filling in at safety in an emergency. Moving him permanently out of postion seems like a mistake.

In today's NFL, I think quality safety play is probably the most scarce and underrated aspect of team defense.

No doubt McCourty has played better this year than last, but he's still inconsistent at corner. And really I think the team is looking for starting corners who can excel in man press, which we both know is an area in which McC struggles.

I'm not particularly vested in the argument but given the inability to shut down 20+ yard plays this season, I think my alignment is best to at least stem the bleeding from deep plays being consistently made down the field.

Pardon me for intruding into this moralistic drama, but its occurred to me that many of the hypothetical line ups for the secondary don't include Patrick Chung. I find it amazing, although pretty typical for the "I want it all and I want it now" fan base we've evolved into recently, that the guy who was undoubtedly the best defensive back we had last season (when healthy), is now not even considered an afterthought by so many.

Patrick Chung might never morph into the elite safety that we all had hoped, but he's a good one when he asked to to do the things that are within his skill set. The sudden anger and hatred that he seems to engender (like Edelman's) is both irrational and uncalled for.

But unfortunately this is the kind of fan base that we've become. We no longer have patience for anything but universally perceived excellence. No mistakes allowed (which is ironic since they play a game where even the best players make a dozen or more mistakes a game),

I look forward to when Gregory and Chung return to the team. Their return will have a far greater impact on the defense than what Talib will bring (even though I think his arrival will help the team a lot going forward)

arrington is a liability out there...he cant cover ANYONE...people want to talk about mccourty, but he has actually been decent out there..its arrington whom teams have been targeting...anyone notice how our coverage improved against the Rams when arrington went out??

Talib immediately becomes out #1 cover corner..

you can either play McCourty as CB#2, or stick him at safety with Chung and play Dennard(who has showed promise) as your #2

im feeling alot better about our secondary today than I did last week. the biggest problem people have been touting has been lack of talent/playmakers in the secondary...well Belichick went out and got a top 10-20CB in a trade that if pans out can be a big difference-maker

Arrington shouldn't be running up and down the sidelines. Hopefully when everyone is healthy he's stuck on inside routes with help.

I've got to disagree with you on this one, Ken.

I've always been pro-Chung, and I don't think I'm particularly representative of the "I want it all and I want it all now" mentality, as you put it. But Chung has been egregious as a deep coverage safety going back to last year, and his return would not help the deep pass hemorrhaging that's been going on.

We haven't had anything even remotely resembling a decent deep safety since BB cut Brandon Meriweather. That's the #1 need for the secondary - a guy with the range, vision, ball skills, closing speed, processing capability, instincts, tackling ability, selflessness, discipline and communication skills to guard the deep part of the field, coordinate the secondary, and make everything work. Earl Thomas does that so well for Seattle. Dashon Goldson - who we should have signed in 2011 when he visited - does that very well for SF. Meriweather had most of the physical tools to do the job, but he was too undisciplined and selfish to play that role effectively for BB.

James Ihedigbo, Sergio Brown and Josh Barrett obviously couldn't play that role. Pat Chung undoubtedly has talent, but not for that kind of role. Tavon Wilson has shown in his brief career that he both has talent and that his talent isn't particularly suited to that kind of role. Steve Gregory has not shown that he has the talent to be a full time starter in that kind of role.

To make matters worse, the Pats' CBs have had significant deficiencies which underscore even more the need for a good deep cover safety. Leigh Bodden's injury and Darius Butler's failure to develop cost greatly. Devin McCourty is a VERY good zone CB but a developing man-press CB. Ras-I Dowling has shown flashes of man cover skills, but can 't stay on the field. Alfonzo Dennard is just beginning to emerge. Arrington and Moore have been quite limited.

The return of Pat Chung may upgrade our safety personnel a bit, but it fundamentally changes none of this. And keeping Chung in a deep FS mode only exacerbates the hemorrhage.

The acquisition of Aqib Talib, in contrast, changes the equation dramatically. Not only is Talib a significant upgrade at CB - especially in press-man coverage - but his presence allows the Pats to move Devin McCourty to FS, and keep Talib and Dennard outside. McCourty has ALL of the attributes of a great deep cover FS that I listed above. I think he could be as good as Earl Thomas and better than Goldson once he gets used to the position. That also allows Chung and Wilsonto play a role more suited to their skill set.

Patchick summed a this up much more succinctly in another thread:

Patchick said:
IMO this trade is not simply a question of individual talent added. It's a tipping point situation: adding that one extra press-style CB should allow schematic changes to make the whole defense more aggressive.

So if Talib is merely "pretty good," his IMPACT could well be "great."

I'm not anti-Chung, but I don 't see how his return could possibly have the same potential impact.

Of course, whether Talin gets his ***** together and has this kind of impact is a different matter altogether.

This is too much. I thought I had seen your homerism at its peak. It's not too much to ask for the team you root for to hold higher standards for its athletes? Kraft passed on Vincent Jackson for the same "family value" reasons, but since the Pats have changed their tune, there always Andy Johnson out there to explain why everyone is wrong for questioning the Pats about anything.

Do you also realize it was Julian Edelman that injured Aaron Hernandez?

Do you realize that you are talking out your arse? Edelman was tackled into Hernandez. Edelman didn't injure Hernandez. Do yourself a favor and stop talking now so you don't make a fool of yourself further.

He needs to bulk up for that particular position in the defense.

This is ridiculous.

These are grown men who are at the very elite of physical fitness, ruthless violent men who will do nearly anything to win.

I don't care if they feed homeless people on Tuesday's. I want them to crush opponents on Sundays and entertain me in a spectacle.

As long as they're not hurting their team I couldn't give a damn how they act off the field.

If you want your daughter to have a role model, you be one. Don't ask 22-30 year old men who bash each other for a living to do it.

Three words said it all. Times have changed.

The social standards that were set for me as a child, and those that my wife and I tried to set for ourselves and our children, have been in a battle for decades. The football stadium is just another place where that battle takes place. If we can accept poor character in the NFL, then why expect it to be different anywhere else?

That's just it. Times haven't changed. People are making statements without having even a modicum of understanding of what happened.

People seem to forget about Dillon and Moss. They both were brought here with baggage, but had changed. There were others who did things (Kenyatta Jones, Willie Andrews, Danny Baugher) and were cut. There have been others who did things that were dumb (Harrison, Spikes) and they served their time and were done.

People have overblown Talib's issues. Outside of not doing the paperwork to notify the NFL about the Adderall script, there haven't been any anger incidents in over a year. And the ones there were can easily be explained through immaturity and the ADD/ADHD diagnosis.

See, the problem here is that you don't actually know how different the situations are.

Vincent Jackson was arrested in 2006 for DUI, which he pled guilty to and was put on probation. In 2009, he was arrested the day before the play-off game against Pittsburgh for suspicion of DUI. He plead guilty and was put on probation again after serving 4 days in jail. In 2010, he was arrested for driving without a license. This was just hours before the play-off game against the Jets.

It's clear that Jackson is selfish and doesn't care about his teammates, otherwise he wouldn't be doing dumb***** like that before play-off games. You'll also note that Jackson was in his 4th and 5th years when the DUI and the Driving on a suspended license occurred.

Now, Talib, on the other hand, had an altercation with a teammate at the 2008 Rookie Symposium that resulted in no arrest. In 2009, there was a an alleged incident with a Taxi driver where he was charges with simple battery and resisting arrest without violence. Those charges were dropped. In 2010, an arrest warrant was issued by Garland, TX because he supposedly discharged a gun at his sister's boyfriend. He was indicted for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, but those charges were dropped due to insufficient evidence AND the character issues with the boyfriend. The boyfriend is a registered sex offender and is currently in jail on charges of indecency with a child/sexual contact. The Boyfriend had ALSO been charged earlier in the day with assault and interference with and emergency phone call. My guess is that the boyfriend had been in a domestic dispute with Talib's sister and had gotten rough with her. Talib and his mom got over there and they got into it. And the boyfriend made up the story to try and ruin the Star football player. Doesn't excuse Talib's actions, but they are understandable.

But, Talib hasn't done anything since 2010. So, it's over 2 years. Yet you want to make him into some kind of monster. Which he isn't.

Not accurate. The shooting at the boyfriend was March 21st, 2011.

In Oct 2012, he got nailed for a banned substance in Oct in which he took during TC

Plus he did stuff in 2010, 2009, 2008.

Every single year it's something...and I'm still glad he is here.
