Player Signing Pats extend Tavai - 2 Years

I don't get the hate in this deal. He is making less than Slater. Sure Slater would be a HOFer if special teamers got into the Hall, but he is also 37 and a pure special teamer. Tavai is a solid special teamer and could be a good to solid rotational LB. $2.2 million a year for a guy like that is chump change these days.

Unfortunately this doesn't seem to help what one would think the most important goal of the team for the future, stopping Buffalo Allen.

Tavai might start but that is because the early downs are statistically running downs. He is subbed out for passing downs and his playing % is decreasing over the year.

I agree we need to stop Allen. Has to be fast LBs, Wilson and McMillan, and Safeties like Duggar and Peppers. We will see what BB has in mind tomorrow night.

Bedard provided some context on Tavai and his Sugar Daddy. According to Bedard....

Jahlani Tavai:

45th fastest LB in 2019 draft (4.85)
Drafted in 2nd round (#43) by Detroit's MATT PATRICIA
Waived by Detroit
after Year 2 (2020), coincidentally the same season Patricia was shidt-canned by the Lions
Unsurprisingly reunited with Matt Patricia in NE in 2021 where Patricia was initially tasked with "special projects" including steering Detroit's discarded player to NE.

Yeah... It shouldn't have been him either.
He's been better than I thought. Not perfect by any stretch, certainly not as bad as Elandon and Myles have been in their Patriot tenure. Hopefully, he can continue to improve and can learn from your favorite coach Steve ;)

Because they don't have enough to make it to Dec 17th?

What happens then?

We'll have become officially eliminated from PO contention?

Yep, this deal absolutely Reeks of doing a solid for one of the F & Fs.

4.85? I thought the idea was to get faster at LB

Yep, this deal absolutely Reeks of doing a solid for one of the F & Fs.

We do not have to get faster at LB for the "running" downs that Tavai plays. He is a platoon guy. Goes in for running plays, goes out for passing downs. This really is not tough. There are two options, the offense will run or pass. When the coaching staff thinks it is a pass play, Tavai is subbed out. When it is a running down, Tavai is smart and stout (but slow) and stays in to stuff the run.

No such thing as a running down with Josh Allen. Better to play McMillian and Mack Wilson than slow feet Jahlani and lumbering Bentley.

Or don’t. And lose.
