Player Signing Pats extend Tavai - 2 Years

Tavai extension makes no sense at this time, unless they're getting ready to extend or restructure someone like Judon. They're scraping the bottom of the cap space.

They clearly think they have the cap to handle it. Why stress over the last pennies of this year's cap it's not like they gonna go buy OBJ or something at this point.

Because they don't have enough to make it to Dec 17th?

What I said, they'll have to restructure/extend someone else. Just makes timing of this extension non-sensical. Bill doing Fat Matt a favor, obviously.

I bet Jahlani is happy AF, as is Fat Matt. He finally gets those pictures back from Jahlani taken at the Coli.

2.2 million a year, that's high end back up or low end starter money. Sounds about right he's a guy I hope is on the bench cuz you have better but it's not the end of the world if he's playing 20-30 snaps a game.
1/8 the cap hit of Jonnu next year who is earning about $300k/catch this year, a bargain compared to Agholor's $500k/ catch pay out

Tavai is now the 84th highest paid LB. Not sure 84th is low end starter money. In 2024, when Tavai is making the same average salary, he will not be in the Top 100 paid LBs. Pretty much a role player, special teamer, and only a starter in emergencies.

Slater has made about $5.3m over the last two years. Tavai’s deal seems pretty good to me. Obviously, they also need a stud LB.

Smaller and slower than Sam Hunt, a name for the old-timers.

He works hard and does what he’s asked. There’s something to be said for that. Good teammate and role model.

Gives me happy Mosi Tatutu vibes.

On the other hand, when he’s paired with Bentley in the middle that is a recipe for death by a thousand cuts in the passing game.

And now with Devin a step slower and Kyle Digger wilting in the last prime tv slot game, we have the YAC being a bigger factor.

Detroit fans got sick of this player. But Patricia carries weight. A second-rounder from Hawaii. A shock I know.

That was an odious autocorrect. I fixed “Carrie’s.”

Only a starter in emergencies is fine but he's averaging 55% of the defensive snaps and peaked at 79%. He's a liability with that much usage.

Peaked at 79%, averages 55%, what is his low point %? With Wilson and McMillan starting to play well, what is Tavai's recent usage % versus previous? Hopefully McGrone is playing next year which will reduce Tavai's playing time further. Being outside the Top 100 LBs in payscale and playing 40%ish, is great value. He is athletic but not fast so is great for run support and special teams.

a solid, safe middle class extension

They always lock up 2nd tier versatile LBs. Been doing it for 20 years.

By the $ this is core ST contract and an average vet core ST at that. So this would be a great deal for the Pats in any case.
Tavai is a very good, dependable core ST player entering his prime.

But : Tavai is a starter on D as well - straight out of TC so by coaching choice from the start.
From this perspective this contract is a huge bargain bordering on agents malpractice.
Reportedly both Fatty and BB were interested in him in the 2nd round. That would make this contract a robbery in broad daylight.

But the fact that they use/play him as a 2nd round LB is in fact - a problem.
While potentially a great role player . one of the best run stuffers / line supporters in the league . he is painfully limited in any kind of movement that is not at the LOS. The fact that Pats leading LB Bentley fits similar category is additional problem.

Unfortunately this doesnt seem to help what one would think the most important goal of the team for the future, stopping Buffalo Allen.
