Pats D still Number 2 in AFC points against

Seattle
Denver
Minnesota
Buffalo
Baltimore
Philly
Arizona
Dallas
Giants
Houston
Buffalo has allowed 40 more points, yes just about 25% more. That is not better. LOL at that one. (Plus if you throw out the game where Jacoby Brisset played QB they allow over 25 ppg, yes a full TD more than the Patriots)
Giants have allowed over 20 ppg, the Patriots 18.1
Houston 20.9

Denver, Dallas has allowed a little bit more, Bmore, Philly, Seattle, Arizona a little bit less, they are all very close.
You certainly cannot say the Patriots stink and those defenses are good.

Minnesota has been excellent.

Name 10 better.

And keep in mind that for the last 6 weeks before Sunday night the defense allowed 0,13,16,16,17,17 (plus a td to buff with backups on the field 30 seconds left and a 24 point lead)

You won't find 10 defenses like that in the NFL.

You won't find 10 defenses in the NFL that have played against more backups and poverty teams

Houston, lol
Pitt without Ben and Bell, lol
Browns, on their 11th string QB, lol
Bengals with no Eifert
Bills without McCoy

But by all means get excited about that. Let me know how it goes next time we play a competent team

It all evens out.

How about Baltimore?
Avg ppg by opponents 19.9
Cleveland twice, Jacksonville, Pitt with Roethlisberger playing injured and worse that Landry Jones, Jets (they lost to the Jets and gave up 24 points with Geno smith starting)

lol how does it even out?

it artificially inflates our defensive to stats to show us sustaining a level of play that we simply aren't. We're 6th in points allowed, and if this is the 6th best defense in the NFL I'll eat my computer.
No it doesn't. No more than playing prevent with a huge lead against Miami does.
Our competition in ppg is pretty much average. I just showed Baltimore for example.

So you think that defenses that allow more points are better than ones that allow less?

You seem to think we only play the 1976 Bucs and everyone else plays the 2007 Patriots.

I don't think in this instance PPG is indicative of anything other than we have played a very favorable schedule. The one real threat we have faced dropped 31 on us

OK, so try this

Patriots allow 18.1 ppg to a schedule that averages 20.7

Pats 18.1 vs 21.7 (3.6 under)
Baltimore 17.8 vs 19.9 (2.1 under)
Minn 16.9 vs 22.3 (5.4 under)
Philly 17.8 vs 20.0 (2.2 under)
Seattle 17.6 vs 23.6 (6 under)
Arizona 17.8 vs 21.9 (4.1 under)

Those are the top 6 scoring Defenses.
the Patriots have faced overall very similar competition to this group.

To your other points:

Baltimore faced one good QB, Carr and allowed 28. They also allowed 24 and lost to Geno smith/Fitzpicktrick

Minnesota has lost 4 straight

Seattle has allowed 24+ to every good QB they have faced.

Philly allowed 24+ to Detriot, Dallas, Wash and the Giants

Az gave 33 to buff and 30 to carolina

Please...just stop. This defense is below average.
It has gone out on the football field and played well above average. That is simply a fact.
That is all we can know. What they do from this point forward is still to be known, but pretending that the way they got good results is a bad thing is ignorant.

Please...just stop. This defense is below average.
The league average defense has allowed 206 points in 9 games (3 teams tied at 14th, 15th, 16th)
The Patriots have given up 163.

So what you are saying is you think a defense giving up 43 more points is better than one giving up 43 less.
That is simply idiotic.

Maybe there are just not a lot of good Ds in the NFL then.

I still think the Pats D is better than average. It played badly last game but has had stretches where it held up well which is more than most Ds have had.

A lot of defenses that played poorly at the start of the season are now playing well.....the Patriots are trending in the opposite direction.
One game is not a trend.
Discounting a td by backups vs backups with 30 seconds left in a 24 point blowout they went 6 consecutive games allowing 17 points or less.
That is the same run the 2001 patriots ended the season on and were hailed as peaking and carrying the team to the SB.

Good d in 2016 and good d in the 1990 or early 2000s are substantially different things.

I think we should all see if there is an improvement this week against the 49er's. Our defense isn't as bad as we played against Seattle....it just can't be, we weren't competitive at all between the 20's. I'm still worried about our 3rd down D, but hopefully, we'll see improvement going forward. I would like to see Rowe back starting this week.

Well what do we do better than average

Stop the run- I will say yes, we do that better than average
Secondary play-Below average, they will give up a lot of yards but not necessarily the big play
Pass Rush- Non existent
Turnovers- We have 9 in in 9 games below average.

We neeed more athleticism out there on D that's for sure pm
