Pats considering Butler trade to Saints for Brandin Cooks

Yeah, also, i take every "inside info" of the Patriots with a pinch of salt. This could be just baseless rumors.

A secondary with Butler and Gilmore and McCourty?

Yummy

The Pats depth would be : Gilmore, Howe, Cyrus Jones, Justin Coleman, Jonathan Jones and whatever the Pats add via the draft/UDFA..

Like I said, the two Joneses and Coleman, no thanks.

I'd rather have Gilmore, Butler, Rowe and have others battle it out for two spots. We have enough weapons on offense that we don't have to be trading away one of our top defensive players, especially when there's no guarantees we are going to re-sign Hightower.

If Bill thinks it is a good idea, something must make him think it looks a good idea.

That's true. It seems like usually when we make a huge transaction, it comes out of nowhere. Which insiders had us trading for Allen and then signing Gilmore to a huge deal. None.

Wrong.

Butler is good. Not 14 mil plus a year good.

And I don't know if Gilmore is either. Can't pretend I know anything about him
Thanks. I learned a lot from your post.

I don't know why you pay an outsider from another team (Gilmore) but you don't pay a guy like Butler who has big game experience and has played clutch in 2 SuperBowls + playoffs... Butler is humble and fits in with the team. Chemistry, continuity. I don't think you can undermine that.

The only thing I see here:

Butler has 1 year left on contract, Cooks has 2 years..... So we get an extra year out of Cooks than we would out of Butler

Butler reportedly isn't happy with his current $.

I don't like but it makes a lot of sense if it's a straight up trade.

Butler is going to cash in next year, so it's one year of Butler for 2 years of Cooks.

"Sources"?

Thinking out loud: Patriots signed Gilmore so they can swing Butler to Saints in trade for Cooks (No. 32 pick + Butler for Cooks.)
— Ryan Hannable (@RyanHannable) March 9, 2017

Seems like this all started with this completely speculative tweet from Hannable a couple hours ago.

Apparently, I don't yet know quite how to embed a tweet.

Sorry!

If BB sends Butler + 32 to the Saints for Cooks he needs brain surgery...Butler should be enough.

Butler and the 32 pick for cooks? That would be a fleece for the saints. Don't do it!

All these wrs are coming off the board. They can still resign floyd.
With the reported interest in both Cooks and Jackson, they're clearly looking for a burner and Floyd is not that. Put together a 3WR/2TE set with Cooks, Hogan, Edelman, Gronk, and Allen. That would be a field day for Brady.

Not to mention this team has some need's in the draft like another pass rusher and maybe a tackle.

All about value. If Bill wants to really upgrade WR, it's going to cost a lot in free agency and there isn't one available like Cooks. Gilmore can slot in for Butler, then you can upgrade WR via trade.

Not saying I agree with it, just saying I can understand it.

I dont like this trade as is.

WRs are the most overrated position in the game. Getting Cooks and paying him big money in the future is way worse than paying big money for Butler.

Maybe Cooks agrees to a new deal if the trade goes through.

I guess #11 in the First would be coming our way that's the only way I make that deal.

IMO, even though having both Butler and Gilmore SOUNDS good, it doesn't make sense to me because then Rowe is the third guy who is not built to be the nickel corner... he's an outside CB. So then you have Rowe riding the bench and you're still using Jones/Jones/Coleman at nickel. It just seems to make more sense, in my head, to keep Rowe at #2 and move Butler for a high pick or a player. I simply don't see Butler, Gilmore and Rowe co-existing on the field at the same time.
