Pats considering Butler trade to Saints for Brandin Cooks

I don't quite agree, but I do prefer our defense with Butler over our offense with Cooks.

DEFENSE. WINS. CHAMPIONSHIPS.

I think we are saying the same thing.

Malcolm (or a CB1) is more valuable to NE than a WR.

IMO. In the open market a CB1 is more valuable than a WR2.

That's why I say in this deal, the Saints should give up more than NE

It's a shame it's looking like we won't be able to see this CB duo.

Butler is probably the reason we won't see this CB duo in all likelyhood, would you want to be making $10m less than a CB you're better than? This is why we can't sign Bennet for Gronkowski money.

Ego's matter in the NFL, Butler is a 2x SB champ and superbowl hero. And better than Gillmore. He deserves the bigger contract.

We all thought the world ended when we paid Arrington and lost Talib too, but we've won a few SB's since then.

Question with Butler is how much more than $14m does he want if BB chose to give Gilmore that money over a homegrown player.

Right, so Patriots offense was doing great the entire Super Bowl. Not being able to finish drives had nothing to do with Atlanta's man-coverage getting the better of the Pats WRs. Nothing a coach as detail-obsessed as Belichick would want to improve, even after being down 25 points. Got it. Brilliant argument.

Saints are "expected" to move Cooks by this afternoon, deal would need to happen very quickly or else it may get ugly if Butler wants to turn his unhappiness into a hold out. Unless there are other suitors for Butler besides the Saints.

So the Pats showed no interest in Gilmore till this AM. And a deal is out there before 10 AM. They must have said how much. Gilmore said $14 mil per for 5 years. And BB said "OK". Wow......

How can they send him a message? Butler has to corporate to go to New Orleans. He isn't currently on the team.

Here's why I still think the trade is likely

1. Is the upgrade from Rowe to Gilmore really worth 14m?

2. If they don't expect Butler to sign beyond next year, recent history (Collins, jones) says that BB would rather get something more than a 3rd round comp pick for him.

That doesn't mean I think a trade is inevitable but the signs are pointing that way. Of course, 2+2 sometimes = 5 on days like this.

Why are you talking like it is such a certainty that Butler is better than Gilmore? With his height, there are receivers that Gilmore can cover that Butler simply cannot. More speed. Don't get me wrong, I love Butler as well and my first reaction was excitement about having bookend number 1 corners but I'm not sure that BB agrees with your assessment, given the contract that they just signed Gilmore to.

Butler may have told the Pats that he wants/needs to be closer to home and thus would be likely to sign an offer with a southern team. The Pats may have thought, "well, let's give that to him and get something we want in return."
Totally making that up but it makes sense.
