Pats claim Garrett Mills

They are gone. I didn't know people were complaining, but I can see why. They were starting to piss me off as well.

they are gone

If I am looking at the board at work and all these graphics are popping up everyone will no I'm goofing off so I appreciate it!

If Mills can play some FB and ST as well as being an emergency TE replacement, could this be a bad sign for Sammie Morris?

(That was not a joke.)

I now officially have No Idea what goes on in Bill's head.
On the surface, this signing appears to make no sense whatsoever. We're short of healthy DBs & C/Gs,
and Bill signs a 6th TE? Unless Mills has learned, during his 5 distinctless years in the league,
how to block from the FB position, then I have no use for him.

If Bill insisted on signing an offensive player who doesn't play OL,
then I'd much rather that he sign Leonard Weaver instead. If healthy, the dude's a beast.

Come on everyone; It's obvious. What else do you do with a TE who doesn't block and has caught as many passes as Matt Light in the last 3 years.

Mills is going to be converted to a DT.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest Bill is questioning his man crush on Mills and took this opportunity to kick his tires to establish whether he was just dreaming when he attempted to stash Mills on his PS or whether time spent in Minny with the evil genius that was Childress derailed his development. It's kind of like the extended version of a tire kicking workout for a guy you once had interest in on draft day whom no one seems all that interested in any longer... Something you can do with a 90 man roster in preseason.

The real question is if Garrett Mills was eligible for the Practice Squad, would BB cut him just to see if he could get him through waivers. And would Chilly try to use his NFL ties to get someone to pick him up? igsfly:

Per Mike Reiss he is eligible for the PS. He is one of those rare bubble guys who has been around a while but apparently not on anyone's active roster for enough games in enough seasons to end his eligibility.

BB will not be denied....... HE WILL GET Mills to the practice squad and through waivers, even if he has to coach 10 more years and pick him up 4 more times.

Holy smokes, it's true! 7 games here, 8 games there, but never quite enough to lose PS eligibility.

OK then, this isn't just a giggle -- it looks like a logical signing. Aaron Hernandez is a key part of the offense, and they have absolutely nobody behind him. Mills is probably as good a PS option as you'll find for h-back emergencies. Let him take a bunch of reps from Hernandez in the pre-season too, and keep Aaron healthy while letting the backup QBs practice targeting a quick little tight end.

It almost seems lime BB is trying to overload the team with so many players that other teams cannot possibly claim them all before some slip through waivers to the PS. If so, this seems like a very expensive depth strategy.

The whole Garrett Mills saga is a little before my time. How does someone with that amount of college production and physical ability stay in the NFL this long, but not produce at all?

Now THAT is an excellent question. Mills seemed like a low-risk pick way back when: super-productive in college, excellent quickness and athleticism, great hands and body control, and above all an acclaimed work ethic. Very surprised he's made so little impact in his career.

Perhaps the asnwer is poor system fit and poor coaching. His best fit seems to be at the non-existent position of H-back. Belichick has wanted one of those for many years. Pehaps he needs to bring in Keith Byers as a coach/advisor.

It would be great if Byars could coach some blocking into him, too.
One would think that Mills would've taught himself how to block by now, anyway,
just so that he could be more versatile for his coaches. After all, the more you can do, the more you can do.

I would guess its because he isn't a good special teamer, despite him apparently having some proficiency as a longsnapper. Therefore he is never activated for gameday, and has a reduced chance at working himself into the offense.

Just a guess, but his resigning here may have as much to do with the bubble status of Sammy Morris and the continued unavailability of Eric Kettani, who seem to be the only people on the roster capable of playing a fullback-type role, as it does with backing up Hernandez. Mills is small for a tight end — shorter and lighter than Hernandez — but you'd think he'd be a good option at the goal line as an H-back or offset fullback, if it turns out he can lead block competently.

Garrett Mills and Justin Rogers were two guys I was very sorry to see go. Welcome back!

Isn't he the one that Brad Childress grabbed off of waivers a few years ago... and Childress said Belichick asked him not to... or something like that?

That's absolutely right: Belichick told Childress in no uncertain terms to NOT grab his tight end.
