Pats Claim CB Rashaan Melvin

Dwight Bentley seems a lot more intriguing at CB

(Pats worked him out recently)

You shouldn't be sold on him until he performs in this defense.

Right now his career is going the wrong way but that does not mean his hasn't demonstrated an ability to be productive and do some good things on the football field. Anyone confident that he will here is nuts.

What I do know is that here he will get great coaching and be put in the best possible position for success.

The question is ....will it take?
Cut by the Ratbirds and claimed by the World Champions, lots of players might not call that the wrong way.

Pretty much every argument I can think of in Melvin's favor also applied to Bradley Fletcher a couple months ago. So I think I'll sit this one out, and mentally prepare for the worst if he ever steps on the field in-game.

The best I can say in this case is I'm confident he won't play a meaningful down for us. I sure hope he doesn't.

Absolutely. After the disaterous playoff game and being banished this year he has a good opportunity to get his career back on track with a quality team and organization.

Gotta get depth wherever you can, I wonder what is going on with dennard that keeps the team from even working him out. I'm not saying they should sign him, just curious if it's a physical issue or something else.
I figure Dennard had his chance. His ship has sailed, and he missed the boat. Don't expect to see him back in the NFL. Don't know if it was physical, mental, or both, don't care, doesn't matter. He's gone. Get over it.

But the Pats still chose to target him and not Webb at that point. So he must not have been doing all that well on tape. Otherwise BB wouldn't have concocted a gameplan built largely on isolating and exposing him.

But this year Ravens posters say he did very well for himself in camp and the preseason, to the extent that he was starting in Week 2 and getting pulled at halftime. Then he got injured and was ineffective when pressed into duty too early.

I think the fact he was able to battle back from that playoff game and all but lockup a starting spot in camp better explains why the Pats took a flyer on him now than anything he put on tape last year.

Real mental toughness is a rare asset in CBs and he seems to have it.
And after targeting him, Belichick claimed him off waivers. I'd think that means Bill knows what his weakness is, and thinks he can either coach Melvin up to overcome it, or avoid putting him in positions where it can be exploited.

I was thinking about this last night. It really is amazing.

The poor kid got absolutely abused, picked on, targeted and shredded by TB, BB and JMD. It was arguably the worst playoff performance by a CB in NFL history.

But the GoAT coach signs him because he thinks there is a chance he can help the team.

He saw something in him. What I haven't a clue.

Just guessing, might have been a couple of things. I'm sure the kid kept competing and didn't give up, because BB would have no truck with him if he did. Probably also saw either a technique flaw that he could coach past, or a player being misused and put in a position to fail because his skills and physical talents were unsuited for what he was being asked to do. Quite possibly both.

I agree. He was pretty good during the regular season w/ BAL in 2014. Not sure if he was going up against WR1 or WR2 or WR3s but nonetheless he did ok. That and he has good length and physical tools. Point is he can play at this level. No question.

Some players just get caught in an injury situation or a numbers game and just can't climb out of it, are released and do well in other places. Look at Darius Butler here. BB cut him loose and hes carved out a nice career for himself in Indy as a nickel DB. It happens.

oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooookay, i was just curious considering how many teams are looking for CB help.

So, again, we'll have Butler, Ryan and Coleman.

We'll see if Brown even plays. It seems early for Melvin to be ready.

Can't hurt to bring him in and see what he has, can't be any worse than Fletcher was for us

I'm at the point where if someone makes this team, they must be pretty good. And if they stick, they are most likely very good. In fact, I take a similar attitude in the draft. If they get picked (by BB), there must be something there. The rest is how they respond to the rest. I can remember being in draft threads and hearing Pats fans go (negative) crazy about Mankins, Solder and a host of others.

how are we suppose to slow down good qb's with weak corners?? if the pass rush is weak, we will struggle.

bend but dont break boys!
That seems to be how the defense is designed this year. Dependent on the pass rush causing havoc for the QB and creating opportunities for the secondary. Although I will say the Pats seemed to do a very good job in man-to-man coverage in the Dallas game.

Is this what Belichick sees?

Even though I ridiculed him for being torched, I tried to do more research on him. And as it turns out, he shows a lot of promise in his college highlights, and I really like what it says in his scouting profile (projected to go in the 5th round). He's basically a rookie (appearing in only 7 NFL games) who still hasn't reached his ceiling yet. Until then, I'll do my best to avoid judging him solely on his worst performances, and I'll let his record with us do the final speaking. The jury is still out on Rashaan Melvin.

  • Love his football IQ, smart player who exhibits keen awareness, play recognition, read/react ability, and remains disciplined
  • Physical and sticky in coverage, stays right in WR's hip pocket
  • Decisive, trusts instincts, not afraid to gamble and undercut coverage
  • Excels in zone coverage --> subtext: adept at coming off his man to make plays (does this a lot as a tackler to prevent YAC)
  • Tough, sometimes violent hitter who's not reckless
  • Attacks downfield, flashes potential as a blitzer and disrupter in backfield (i.e. 1.5 TFL vs. Florida State in Orange Bowl)
  • Solid tackler who exhibits proper form and is able to wrestle ball carrier down individually (numerous examples throughout 2011 GoDaddy.com Bowl)
  • Playmaker mentality as tackler/hitter: sets under control, squares, leans forward and explodes into ball carrier, targeting the football with helmet --> smart, opportunistic, has forced fumbles doing this
  • Displays burst when closing final few yards in coverage
  • Good in pursuit, cuts off angle and squeezes ball carrier to sideline
  • Gets head around in coverage, plays ball in the air well, great in jump ball situations where he can use length/leaping ability/toughness to disrupt WR
  • Impressive body control, especially while in the air
  • Showed off natural hands while accumulating 5 total INT in 2010-2011; highlights show high-pointing ball and cleanly snatching it out of the air
  • Provides utility on special teams, especially FG block unit -- speed, flexibility around the edge and long arms make him dangerous in this capacity
Overview: Interesting player with prototypical physical characteristics and length for the position, which is made even more enticing when factoring in instincts and football IQ. Has some warts and quickness out of breaks is concern, but can't deny upside and fits profile as potential steal on Day 3. Will earn keep on special teams at first and has skills to eventually crack starting lineup in base defense. Have only heard good things about his character, has been described as "wise."

Value: 5th round
