Patriots Training Camp (Day Five, Tuesday July 30)

My impression of Mallett is improvement over last year, and an overall smoothness and familiarity with this system...

My bet is that he will still be the back up this year...

Compared to Number 5, he may look better than he actually is...

Sudfeld wears 44, but I know what you're saying. I don't think there's ever been a really good WR who wears 17. There's one year wonders like Braylon Edwards, and one trick ponies like Mike Wallace and Plaxico Burress.

I'd be OK if he were the next Harold Carmichael. Sure, he'd have to grow a few inches, but he's still young.

QB succescion talk aside, I LOVE the loss of Tf'nB's binkies! Get back to the spread the rock mentality that won him championships as the unheralded nobody. Be the game manager. Be the unheralded guy who reacts. Don't be the GOAT who makes the "should be open" read. Simplify this offense. If pick upon pick can't see the field the same as Tf'nB (can't imagine why that would be, given he's 38 to their second/first year), maybe work your QB to the athletes, instead of your athletes to the cognitive, technical, experienced qb? Just sayin...

I wouldn't go that far, but I agree that the process he's going through this off-season is a good one. Getting comfortable with the new guys before the games count is essential to spreading it around, and there's no reason that he shouldn't adapt his game to the (best) players around him, much like BB adapts his system to the players he has.

Reports are that Dobson was cleated, will return to practice tomorrow.

Damn it! I cancelled my order for my Dobson jersey figuring that he was going to IR. Now I have to reorder it now that he is on track to be the best rookie WR in NFL history again.

Trying to live my life with the overreaction crowd is sure tiring.

Then you haven't been paying attention.

I've been paying plenty of attention to the offseason/TC reports. I've seen the reports of him this year.

Now, I do grant that, unlike last year, I've not attended camp personally this year. On the other hand, Joker has, and his reports (among others) are available here for you to read.

8. The Patriots did a ball-security drill in which an offensive player carried two footballs across the width of the field with a pair of defenders attempting to dislodge them. Running back Stevan Ridley, who has had fumbling issues in the past, had one ball stripped. We'll continue to closely watch his ball handling throughout the preseason.

Ridley, IMO, was a top RB in the NFL last season. But he's got to get these fumbling issues in camp under control. They were somewhat of an issue in 2011, weren't really an issue in 2012 (I can forgive him for the fumble in the AFCCG because he was knocked unconscious), and now appear to be rearing their ugly head in TC again. Hopefully, he gets it under control before the season starts because the running game, particularly early on, is probably going to be a big part of this offense given the turnover in the passing game.

Hell, I took a hammer to the Hall of Fame bust that I created for him in my living room. Looks like I'm going to have to construct another one from scratch.

Hope Suds continues to look good and develop into an NFL TE. He's fast becoming one of my binkies. As stated somewhere here, he may be too good to try to stash on the PS. With Pitta out for the year at Balty, Ravens picked up former Pats Shiancoe. Suds would probably be an upgrade over Shiancoe for the Ravens.

No way, IMHO, Suds would slip under the radar to the Pats PS given his current TC accomplishments. If anything, I could see a redshirted IR (wink wink) season for him.

Totally agree with the above Kontra. Reminds me of the season Kevin Faulk had when BB benched him. Extra practice on ball security worked wonders for Kevin. Hopefully Ridley gets it under control. Thankfully the Pats have a very deep stable of good RB's.

What are the odds of BB keeping 5 RB's this year? Hate to have to cut any one of them. ( Ridley,Vereen, Bolden,Blount,Washington)

I'm a good sport, I can take ridicule well, lol. Well done Rob0729 !

I wasn't pointing to you specifically. I was just goofing on the entire overreaction of fans in general to training camp.

I could care less about the "bad throws" from the third string QB. If he sees the field he will not be asked to do anything he's not good at.

#rememberMattCassell

Matt Cassel could throw the ball in the same zipcode as the receiver.

Tebow overthrew the receiver by 20 yards with no pass rush whatsoever coming his way.

Point was Cassell wasn't asked to do things he wasn't good at - that offense was simplified a lot - and it worked.

The same will be true for Tebow should he see the field as QB.

Don't know why, but the Tebow comment made me literally laugh out loud, at least he didn't underthrow the guy. I'm rooting for Tebow though.

Teblows skillset is the following.

Take the ball, Run for a 6 yard gain or a 20 yard loss.
Take the ball and throw an interception
Take the ball and throw it as far as you can, Have reciever run as fast as they can, hope receiver catches the ball.

Our defense is not good enough to support an offense that has three plays.

You must not have watched a lot of Tebow's games. Not trying to be an apologist or a homer, but your assessment of his skillset is just false.

I was one of the 8 million people there yesterday (it gets more crowded every year). Here are my thoughts:

- On Tebow, when he is in the drills, his throws are truly horrendous. Words don't do it justice. He got a little bit better going against a defense, but he also can take forever to pull the trigger. There was an endzone situation where he just sat with the ball - in a game situation, you'd expect he could try to take off and run. It's not looking natural right now. Still, he's harmless at the moment since he's clearly well behind Mallett and not taking reps from either of our top two. He's going to have to improve at QB, or prove his value in another way.

- Mallett is a very good thrower of the football. Whether that translates to QBing, hard to tell from one visit. Will be easier to tell when preseason starts, but even then, we know based on Cassell that sample size is small in those games.

- Brady doesn't look any different. A year older makes no difference. He was clearly frustrated with the offensive performance at times. The offense looks like it really had to grind at times, and I think Chandler Jones would've had several sacks had this been a game. Amendola seems to be the only guy getting consistently open, so Brady looks there a lot.

- Ballard is behind and doesn't look 100% yet. Fells looked decent. Sudfeld had some nice plays, but also one that prompted Brady to lose it for a moment. I don't think he was mad at Sudfeld as much as the offense for a lackluster practice.

- Blount did something that led to a blown play and quickly received some coaching from an annoyed Fears.

- The entire time I was watching, I was thinking, "man, sure would look better with Hernandez out here." The sooner we all stop thinking those things, the better.

- Amendola made several tough catches. He looks legit. He made a couple catches that Wes couldn't get to. Including the kind of throw that, well, never mind. You know where I'm going with it.

- Extremely hard to read into KO stuff in camp when basically every KO is a TD return, but Washington still looks quick in terms of straight line speed.

- Chandler Jones looks bigger. No doubt about it.

- Aaron Dobson is ripped.

- Not sure what Adrian Wilson can do on the field yet, spent less time watching the D, but think he wants to take his leadership role seriously. Even something as simple as giving Dennard a pat on his way out to practice, suggests to me he's involved with these guys. Hopefully he can mentor these young guys, on and off the field.

- Thompkins is established and running with the 1's, and Boyce made the most of his opportunity with Dobson out. Jenkins is losing momentum to the young guys. Didn't notice Aiken as much. Think this is headed for a Amendola-Thompkins-Dobson-Boyce group. Which is both frightening and exciting at the same time. I think people will be reminded of what Brady can do, and how he elevates players. Garbage in equals garbage out, and Brady has been handed garbage a lot. But as long as these guys are not Chad Jacksons or Ochocincos, I think we're going to be fine at WR. They seem solid enough. It's a work in progress, but the rookies are earning their reps right now. Which is more than we could ever say about Chad Jackson or Taylor Price.

- The larger issue is that the loss of Hernandez, combined with Welker, and the temporary loss of Gronk is a huge talent and chemistry loss to overcome. It's just a lot to happen all at once.

Point was Cassell wasn't asked to do things he wasn't good at .

Agree completely, as long as the Patriots don't ask Tebow to play QB he should be fine.

I tried that, but then I saw the opening scene from The Last Boy Scout again and couldn't help but think of him.......

Observations from fifth practice - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

Small excerpt from article

"Tim Tebow had his best day of work in training camp, showing steady improvement from recent performances. He showed good arm strength and accuracy on throws down the field, and looks to be more decisive with each live rep. In addition, the team walked through some read option work early in practice, something Tebow's movement skills can be used in. From afar, it seems as if Tebow's work with offensive assistant coach Brian Daboll is paying early dividends."
