Thanks! I don’t see the Willie connection. His Uncle?

From the article:
"McGinest is a close family friend, close enough Austin refers to him as an uncle."

4.55 and below average metrics for his position. Sounds like a perfect fit for Bill

6'1 - 196lbs
4.52 - 40 on the HH

7.06 3-cone isn't "below average" for the CB position.
a 4.25 in the shuttle is about average.

10'02 in the broad is pretty decent

I can’t get past this paywall. Curious what the article says (wrong answers accepted as well)…

Austin couldn’t have asked for better news. He had another connection to New England, aside from Jones: Patriots Hall of Fame linebacker Willie McGinest. McGinest is a close family friend, close enough Austin refers to him as an uncle.

“(McGinest) got a lot of accolades and won three Super Bowls. I know all about the Patriots and the Patriot Way,” Austin said. “I talked to Willie yesterday as soon as we found out I was coming here. He was happy, he was ecstatic.”

Austin said he planned to call McGinest on Thursday night to recap his first day. He hadn't even checked in to his hotel room yet around the corner from the stadium. Austin shared he hopes to make New England his home.

You're right, we should expect much more for a 7th rounder that may or may not be on our Practice Squad by the time of the bye.

People seem to forget that the Pats have had success with guys like Austin... Malcolm Butler comes to mind.

Also, for some perspective:

Jonathan Jones had a 4.25 shuttle and a 10'3 Broad jump and a 7.25 3-cone
Malcolm Butler had a 4.27 shuttle and a 10'3 Broad jump and a 7.20 3-cone
Jack Jones had a 10'04 Broad jump.
Ellis Hobbs had a 4.54 - 40
Logan Ryan had a 4.56 - 40 but just a 9'8 broad and a 32.5" vertical.
Cre'Von LeBlanc had a 4.67-40, 9'06 Broad jump, a 34" vertical, a 4.21 shuttle, and a 6.95 3-cone.

People should keep in mind that Austin is a legit 6'1. So, he's 2-4 inches taller than these guys as well.

Not saying that Austin will amount to anything, but he's got height and measurables that are similar to other players on the team who have had success.. So let's see how he plays out. He could be nothing or he could be the next exciting DB find ala Jon Jones.

Then they should've signed somebody with more experience.
