looking at players drafted like Andrews, Mafi, Sow, Hines, Sherman, Woodard, Herron, Froho.
these players simply did not receive the proper coaching needed for a lineman selected on day 3.
can't say they were bad picks. more likely, they never had a chance given the coaching and schemes while they were here

That explains how they signed 16 UDFAs when they only had 10 spots.

Only potential surprise is Andrews.
Not to me. A lot of folks on here were trashing me for saying that I didn't see anything in him to be optimistic about, and they were saying that he was our Center of the future. It would appear that the current Coaching Staff agreed with me.

Yes and no. It's fair to criticize the coaching but it's also fair to acknowledge that they just haven't looked good. Froho latched on somewhere so I guess you can say it for him. Keep in mind that most day 3 picks suck and wash out of the league fairly quickly. So it's not even like it's a big thing to say that some of those guys just suck.

Even that being said, I think it's still kind of a surprise they didn't even bring him to camp.

2023 day 3:

4(107) C Jake Andrews- released

4(112) K Chad Ryland - released. Team committed the double sin of drafting him too highly, then releasing him too early.

4(117) G Sidy Dow - will likely be on the roster bubble

5(144) G Atonio Mafi - released

The 6th round picks were better than the 4th round picks.

Not a very high bar to clear for 106 Woodson/137 Farmer/146 Swinson.
Sidy is going to drop like the Dow?

Well, there goes the possible center. Andrew's, we hardly saw ya

Sow was decent his rookie year. I expect him to get a legit shot.

Keep in mind the team needs to make a decision on Strange's 5th year option (which they will decline).

He might be traded (or cut) if Sow and others at LG do well.

You're stuck with seeing what Strange can do here. I understand the contract ramifications, but if he ends up looking really good, you might start thinking of him instead of Onwenu.

Or you kick Onwenu back out to tackle if Wallace doesn't look like he can be the replacement for Moses.

Came over to see the commentary - Looks like no one knows yet. Only prominent name was Jake Andrews. The other 5 were guys I didn't know were on the roster in the first place. Hope they weren't binkies of anyone

Nooooo. Let's see if onwenu is worth his keep at rg. I expect him to be better with Moses next to him....

Wallace to me seems like a swing tackle. We might draft RT of future next season along with left guard.

Andrews and Leo would be my scrap heap pickups if I was a team that needed center or LB depth.

Ricci surprises me a little bit, given that IIRC he was literally Vrabel's first signing after being hired.
True - but seven tight ends seemed excessive.

Made sense for one of either Ricci or Westover to be released, after adding two UDFA TEs (plus a FB).

With who they drafted (and the 6'6 330lb RG/RT from BC as an UDFA), perhaps Marrone and the rest of the staff wanted to concentrate on those OL players they rated more highly.

This is an undervalued reason for a lot of cuts. The coaching staff has to make quantity of opportunity vs. quality of time investment decisions.

Pretty surprised they released Andrews!. I guess that explains why they picked the C in the draft.
It may be related to injury (torn knee meniscus). the others are not surprising.

Also read where Bedard claims the Patriots were considering drafting at 38, the guard that Miami picked at 37 (Jonah Savaliinaea)...before the dolphins traded up to get him. All of this makes me believe the Pats do not have a lot of confidence in Layden Robinson as a quality G backup. Also they do value the guard position.
what it says to me is that they look at campbell as a tackle.

New day , new team.

Andrews' knee may have never healed properly. We don't know if Strange's knee is OK.
